Two questions, both refer to the dash panel indicator lights; how do you reset the "service engine" light and what are common problems found when "brake light" is on if all brake lights are working?

Bill Boyd is not correct in this instance. The transmission range sensor is located on top of the transmission and can be changed out by a B level mechanic. The range sensor is made of plastic on the inside and has metal coatings applied to it which make the connections needed for the indicator and trans itself to know what gear you intend to be in. These metal coatings wear through and cause your gear indicator to read improperly and the check engine light to come on. You will also likely notice driveability issues. It is a GM design and does not last very long. Extremely common failure, I have replaced at least three on different Saabs myself. If memory serves me you can buy new ones for approx $135. DON'T buy used! it will just fail again.

Check engine light comes on and off, these are indication that there is some error code stored in your vehicles ECM. The engine module computer needs to be scanned. These will give the code and as per the error code the further problem can be detected and confirmed. The engine light indicator blinks or remains steady on dash when engine computer noticed any problem with any engine electrically operated components.

This is the emissions system warning light, commonly referred to as the "Check Engine" light.
Please read on.

The information below was complied by me, it explains what causes the check engine light to come on and the process of finding the cause.

When the Check Engine light (or Service Engine Soon) is turned on, the systems computer control unit (called the ECM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 50 possible system faults. To find out which one is causing a problem have the system scanned by a local shop with a MB compatible scan tool.

You can stop by a local Autozone, Advance, etc parts store and they'll reset your lights for you FREE . Dash resets don't clear possible faults.

The way to reset any E46 BMW (3 series 1999-2005) is as follows:

Turn the car off and then hold in the odometer reset button on the left side of the dash. Turn the key to on but not start. Hold for a few seconds and the service reminder will show in the instrument panel. Release then double push the button and the service reminder will reset. If you just keep single pushing at that point, you will be surprised about all the information you can learn.

From what I remember with my Mighty Max '90, if you remove the dash panel , the one with the cluster gauges, you will find a push button that resets the engine maintenance light. It's a thing that wont reset by itself and lights up at specified mileage that is reached by the odometer. Usually the mechanic that does the work indicated by the light will reset it when the work is done. The red light might indicate a serious problem, so before you ignore the possible problems it might indicate, eliminate the the serious ones before you reset. The trick is to get the dash panel off.

sir, service engine soon is your emissions light malfunction indicator, meaning your car will not pass a smog test. It will not pass inspection in most places either. It can't be reset and stay off till the problem is fixed. Any auto parts store can retrieve the code for you and most like Autozone do it for free, Most common reason for the service engine soon light tends to be an oxygen sensor. But with the code it will lead you to the problem. Hope this helps.
