1998 mercury mystique -- the transmission gave up without any warning just as we were picking up my wife's mother from the hospital. It was bad .We just barely made it to her apartment. I do remember a slight whining noise when I had the windows down just before picking her up. Later I bravely tried to drive it the 70 km home but only made it a little way down the street. CAA towed me home. It wouldn't move before the tow but I tried it today in the yard and I thought it must have repaired itself- moved forward, reverse just fine -for a few minutes, then I thought it wise to park it. I'm a retired schoolteacher and am hoping for an easy fix but from what I've found so far,I'm a bit worried. Everything else about the car is fine. What do you think I could or should do?

I have a 97 Mercury Mystique. Everything seemed fine. Went to work with no problem. After work I put the car into reverse and the transmission sounded like someone put a ton of rocks into it. After pulling back into my parking spot the car wouldn't move in reverse. The next day I came back to it to tow it home and everything seemed almost normal. It went into reverse, moved forward, but now you can still hear some grinding at low speeds. Will changing the fluid and filter help or should I just pull the transmission and have it rebuilt?I have a 97 Mercury Mystique. Everything seemed fine. Went to work with no problem. That happened once in a Datsun pick up I had. A friend took the boot off of the gearshift and found something had come loose and pushed it back into place.
you have to take the transmission pan off of your transmission to corretly change the fluid and the filter you should take it to your local shop and have done the average price for this is around 125
