Loud ticking sound coming from the engine. My brother in law,a mechanic, says it sounds like a valve-train. Any thoughts ? I have had it to Lincoln twice and they have no solutions

Valve covers are not made of plastic. They are either stamped mild steel or cast aluminum. It is very unlikely that whatever made the ticking sound would cause a valve cover to fracture without the engine misfiring noticeably or other serious issues occurring. Are you saying that since this "hole" appeared, the noise has stopped?
Judging from your description I would suggest having a qualified mechanic assess the problem before driving the car much further. If something has broken in the valve train and metal fragments have gotten into the oil it can cause catastrophic damage to the engine.
Hey Kimberly... First... is the noise a high pitched ticking or a lower pitched knocking or clunking?? ...this is IMPORTANT>>
Reply to me on here..please...
Lifter may be worn or cam lobe is worn and is probably due a timing belt replacement as well.Sounds like just a high mileage problem lots of people complain of valve train noise from these engines its not uncommon. I would use a high mileage engine oil to help with the noise but i am afraid the noise is only going to get worse over time you may look into salvage engine with a warranty or having the engine rebuilt it sounds like it is already burning oil. The valve lash can be adjusted on this engine but if your not a mechanic i do not recommend this, it is very sensitive procedure and can damage the engine permanently. Take it to a shop have them check your valve lash and adjust it for the noise issue to save yourself some time and money on a very costly repair with improperly adjusted valve lash. Remember to rate my solution Thanks in advance.
It sounds like a collapsed hydraulic valve lifter- a part of yoiur valve train in the upper engine. You need to have it checked at a shop you trust I don't know of any oil additives that can cure this, although someone here may give you some advice. Loose valve train noise is common on high-mileage engines, but if it is a collapsed lifter, I think you should have it checked. A loose timing chain will make a rhythmic slapping sound, but the ticking you describe sounds more like it's in your valve train. Have someone check it.
Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. That is possible. More then likely, it is a associated with the valve lifter. If it was a rod, you would hear a knocking sound compared to the ticking sounds a bad lifter gives off. As far as which lifter it is, the only way to know for sure if by taking off the valve cover and examining the lifters. You are in the right area though. Check your lifters and you should fine what is causing the ticking. Put all your focus on that area. Your friend sounds like he knows what he is talking about so he may be able to help you work on it if you are not able.
The ticking sound when the engine is cold could indicate worn lifters. It could also be caused by a timing belt slap when the engine is cold, when the belt heats up the sound goes away. If you have low oil pressure when you hear the ticking sound it could indicate a bad oil pump. Another possibility is valve lash when it is cold - all of these conditions will disappear when the engine heats up. The ticking is more likely to come from the valve train or the lifters - unfortunately these are not items you can easily check on your own unless you are a skilled mechanic. It is better to take it to a mechanic, tell them what you think it may be and ask them to look specifically at those items.
Is it a ticking or knocking noise? or does it sound like something is leaking could be a bad manifold gasket which would be better than a ticking or knocking.
