The transfer case needs to be checked. To check that the transfer case is engaged, then lift the Wrangler so all four wheels are off the ground. Engage 4wd (hi or low), start the Jeep and put it in drive. At least one front wheel and one back wheel should spin. Also check vacuum lines to the front axle and transfer case. If you have a bad check valve or a broken line, your transfer case can be in 4wd but your front axle wont engage. The Jeep Wranglers were equipped with a vacuum actuated Center Axle Disconnects (CAD). Its job is to engage the front axle when in 4x4 in engaged. These assembly's become very failure prone with age. They are easy to repair and replace, make sure to verify that it is receiving vacuum as the vacuum lines often go bad and leak. The CAD assembly is located on the back side of the front axle tube, just to the left of the pumpkin, when looking from the front. To see the vacuum line diagram, see the fig below:--- My 1995 Jeep Wrangler will - helpmech_43.jpg
---------------------- If neither one of the front tires are driving while in 4x4, but the front driveshaft is spinning, you may have a front differential problem.------------- You must also try adjusting the screw holding the linkage. There is an adj screw on the back side of the linkage "bar" that you might need to adjust to get it to work right."Check the transfer case shifter to see if it will move to 4L. If not, the linkage will need adjusting. Place the shifter in 4L".To adjust you need to lift the lever. loosen the bolt, adjust the linkage where it seemed it needed to be, tighten the bolt, put it in 4H, 4L. Try this loosen bolt and pull lever to 4L and tighten, but if it wouldn't go back to 2H. Then put it in 2H and loosened bolt and pulled lever and tightened bolt. ---------------- This troubleshooting, procedure will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

The 4 wheel drive in my 1995 Jeep YJ is not working. I will shift in to the 4H position and the 4x4 indicator will come on, but the system does not engage. Any clues?

Check the vacuum disconnect on the front axle. After 15 years, the lines break and/or get clogged. I have seen a few of the shift forks in there broken on Jeeps still wheeling with the stock Dana 30. There is a cable option which replaces the vacuum system if you dont want to worry about having the problem again. check Quadratec or 4WD hardware.

How does the four wheel drive on my jeep work or lock in?

If you have a CJ or Cherokee, when you move the 4x4 lever, it engages the transfer case which then transmits power to the front as well as the rear wheels. For most (99%) of all four wheel use, you use the front position on the shifter one notch behind the two wheel drive setting. Use 4 low only for pulling vehicles out of mud etc and don't drive in that range. If it sticks in 4wd after disengaging it, usually backing up about twenty feet will help.
If you have a Grand Cherokee, the 4x4 usually is a quadratrack unit. That one stays engaged but only goes into 4wd mode when the rear wheels begin to slip. (by itself). Rules for using low are the same.
It is very important to run the exact same size and style tires on any 4x4. It is mandatory on quadratrack units. Use of odd sized tires can cause driveline damage.
There are variations on different year vehicles but the basics remain the same.

My 4-wheel light does not come on, when I engage the 4-wheel drive. Does this mean that my 4-wheel drive is not working?

the best way to tell if the four wheel drive is working is to engage the 4x4 try turning as sherp as you can and if it hops a little then you know its working

4 wheel drive doesnt work.

Has this Jeep been modified at all?
It sounds like the shifter cable was reinstalled backwards.
Specifically the 4-Low "Not Climbing Well". 4-Low should give you the best torque and hill climbing ability.
Do you feel any "Binding" in the steering wheel (difficult to turn)?
Remember a Jeep uses real driveshafts and differentials to give you 4WD - you cannot engage 4WD or 4-Low on dry hard surfaces. It needs a little bit of slip between the wheels for turns.
Check you're fluids too.

Don't know how to engage 4WD - No owners manual

I love driving 4x4 jeeps, especially in 4-wheel drive. First, a list of when you should and should not use 4-wheel drive.

2x4 Hi is for normal driving in most weather and anytime you are driving over 50mph.

4x4 HI is for getting you unstuck from mud or snow and can be used up to 50mph but is not recommended for much faster. It is only designed to get you moving and unstuck, it will NOT make it any safer to drive faster on slick surfaces like rain, snow, or ice. Always drive slower on these kinds of surfaces.

4x4 lo (low) is for extreme 4x4 driving like trail riding and mud bogging to get over steep inclines and deep mud without burning up the clutch. 4x4 lo should never be used to drive faster than 25-35mph and should only be used in off road situations.

Neutral (on the 4x4 shifter) is mainly used if you are towing your jeep with any of the wheels on the ground. It completely disengages the transmission from the drive train so you can tow it without damaging the trans.

Now, to shift from one to another. My jeep may be different than yours and I haven't driven my jeep in a while (I had to sell it) but it should shift the same way.

First, make sure you are parked and the wheels are not moving. Put the main gear shift (5-speed) into Neutral, hold down the clutch and move the selector from 2x4 to 4x4 by first pulling the shifter to the side then moving it up or down. Some jeeps (especially older ones) may have a wheel lock on the outside of the wheel hub (AKA hub lock). This must be in the "LOCK" position for 4x4 and "UNLOCK" for normal 2x4 driving. Make sure it is fully engaged in the slot before shifting into 1st. Then you can drive normally, following the guidelines above.

The regular 5-speed transmission will shift just the same as before but you will notice that the jeep will drive much slower in 4x4 lo and it will have much more torque for those really sticky situations.

Good luck! Have fun! And if you do plan on doing some real 4x4'in or mud boggin' make sure you buy a winch for the front of your jeep or bring a friend who has a winch on their truck to get you unstuck from the worst of the worst! Don't forget to rate!

P.S. if you have problems with one or more 4x4 settings you can always shift back to 2x4. Make sure that if you are driving on the highway or in normal driving conditions, you are always in 2x4.

P.P.S. If you are near the Columbia, MO area send me a PM, I'd love to find some new friends to do some 4x4 driving with in the area so I can get back into the sport. I miss it.

How do I activate the 4 wheel drive for snow highway driving?

They didn't make Grand Cherokees in '86, so I assume you mean '96?

I'm also assuming it is indeed a 4x4 and not a two wheel drive...sorry, I have to ask!

All the V8's GC's were Quadra-Trac. Please confirm this with what is label on your shifter. If so, it should say "4Hi, N, and 4Lo".

The Quadra Trac system has a viscous coupling. Meaning, that when the rear wheels start to slip, it heats the coupling up, and engages the front wheels.

This system typically put about 95% of the power to the rear wheels, and only about 5% goes to the front during normal driving, so it's essentially in 2wd mode.

When you put the transmission shifter into neutral, and pull your transfer case down to 4lo, then you have all four wheels locked. Do not drive like this on dry pavement.

To answer your questions, the 4x4 should automatically engage when the rear wheels start to slip. It is a seamless transition and you really won't be able to tell.

If you're in real bad snow, then pull it down to 4lo. That'll lock all four wheels in and give you greatest traction.

Drive safe.

Trouble shifting into 4 wheel drive

The lever is hooked up to a cable system that hooks into each type of drive. It could be that the wire hook end is missing the notch to engage in 4x4 and passes it instead. You can get easy access to it directly underneath the shifter under the jeep.
