Is the problem the thermostat, or is the heater control blend door not diverting the blower air across the heater core....or is the heater core clogged? The thermostat is actually the least likely cause of cool air in the passenger compartment.

For A 1996 Windstar:
1. Disconnect Battery Ground Cable.
2. Drain Engine Coolant System.
3.Remove Cowl Top Vent Panel For Clearance.
4.Disconnect Heater Water Hoses From Heater Core Inlet And Outlet Tubes In The Engine Compartment.
5.Remove Ground Strap Attatchment (If Present) From Heater Core Tube.
6.Remove Cassete Box.Center Instrument Panel Support Trim.
7.Pull Out And Remove Cup Holder.
8.Remove Rear Seat Air Flow.
9.Disconnect Keyless Entry Wiring Harness, If Equipped.
10.Remove Center Instrument Panel Support Brackets.
11.Disconnect Climate Control Vaccum Line Connector.
12.Remove Heater Floor Duct.
13.Remove Heater Core Cover Retaining Screws and Remove Heater Core Cover.
14.Remove Heater Core.
15.To Install, Reverse Removal Procedure.

Heater Housing

The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core. Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It is therefore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.
The heater housing is disassembled to get to the heater core.
Heater Core Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain access to the heater core. Remove the heater coolant hoses. Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped). Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps. Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing. To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps. When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

1.Disconnect the cable from the nrgative battery terminal. Drain the cooling system
2.Remove the cowl vent panel, Then disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core inlet and outler tubes at the firewall.
3. on models so equipped, disconnect the engine ground strap attached to one of the heater core tubes.
4.Remove the center dash support trim and the radio cassette box ashtray.
5. Pull back the carpeting and pull the rear airflow duct away from the main floor duct.
6. Remove the two instrument panel support brackets and the heater main floor duct.
7. Remove the screws and the heater core cover, the remove the heater core. (Be careful not to tear the foam sealing material).
8. When reinstalling the heater core in the housing, make sure the original foam sealing the material is intact and in place.
9. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal.
10. Fill the cooling system.
Run the engine and check for coolant leaks.

Heater Core Removal

1. Partially drain the cooling system.
   

1. Remove the tube gasket from the heater core tubes.
   

1. Remove four heater core access cover retaining screws and remove the access cover from the A/C evaporator housing (19850).
   

1. Remove A/C electronic blend door actuator.
   

1. Slide heater core (18476) and seals from the A/C evaporator housing.
   

Installation

1. Install the heater core in the A/C evaporator housing with the tube gasket on the outside of the case.
   

1. Install A/C electronic blend door actuator as described.
   

1. Position the heater core cover on the A/C evaporator housing. Install the four retaining screws.

possable problems:

1. coolant leak (level too low to fill heater core)
2. headgasket leak forcing the coolant out of the overflow.
3. stuck thermostat.
4. bad water pump. if the impelers are broken, coolant wont flow.
5. HVAC malfunction. system may think you selected cold or is unable to move diverter. maybe a fuse,solenoid or vaccum leak? (hvac controler uses vaccume controled soleniods)
6. airlock. if you have resently changed your coolant, you may need to repeatedly squeeze the heater core hose to help force out the air.

there is 2 deffrent heater core in ur car try maybe the front one in blocked u can check this by feel both the front heater core hose have alomst same temp .

Check to make sure your control lever is not disconnected. First

Check the motor controlling the heat cold/hot DOOR window. Sounds like its in the cold position, thus you are not getting the heat. The door needs to move and shut off the cold intake so that the air is passing through the heater core.

The third item is, although you flush the heater core, it can still be clogged up, in which case you will have to replace it. You probably flush the tanks of the heater core. Think of it as a miniature radiator. The tanks get clean, but unless the hot water passes from one end to the other through the vanes there is not heat, because the heater core is not getting hot.
