It sounds like the float in your fuel tank has dropped down. This can be attributed to a bent float to sender rod (unlikely in your case - requires some kind of physical damage - interesting enough usually caused during attempted repair) It is most likely, in the case of a plastic float, a hole allowing fuel to enter the air space which keeps the float "floating" or, as in some older tanks, a cork float which has become saturated with fuel and has begun to sink. Let me know if this helps. Thanks

You are most likely going to need to replace float assembly

When filling up the pump stops as if the tank is full. I know it's not as I can only pump about a quarter of a gallon of gas at a time. I can hold the handle so the flow of gas is so slow it will fill

run the fault codes as the problem is normally about venting and this is a purge valve for the canister problem. having said that there are lot of poorly designed fillers on the market that will not allow quick fills as the pump hose trigger keeps cutting of no no reason. You may have to just take your time when filling like most people do.
In this country lock fillers have been banned and you have to hold the trigger until the tank is full. Stops idiots from putting the nozzle in the tank and then wandering off and allowing the tank to over fill and create a dangerous situation..

I have a 2006 Pontiac Montana. My gas guage is extremely unreliable. I run out of gas when the guage shows a quarter tank. And the digital readout for fuel range will say I have anywhere from 65 to 130...

I would guess you will have to replace the sending unit in the tank. A mechanic can check the sending unit with a meter and find out if the sending unit is faulty or the gauge on the dash.

put a test light on the wire from the tank if the gauge goes to full its a bad sending unit in the tank

My gas gauge in my cutlass is broken. when i fill up my car the meter reads just above a quarter of a tank. if i were to get it fixed would it stay fixed or will it start doin the same thing all over again...

It depends on the quality of the parts, but it should be fine after you have it fixed. The fuel level sending unit is in the gas tank, so there is not a whole lot of wear and tear on it. Just make sure that you have a good gas cap, and try to keep it as full as you can to avoid excessive moisture in the tank.

Gas gauge flys from quarter tank to way past full mark and sticks

This isn't a definite fix, but it may be that the gasoline in your tank is 'sloshing' forwards and backwards and your sensour is getting readings when the gasoline is in different positions in your tank. The connection is actually above your gasoline tank and you'll have to take off the tank harnesses and drop the tank if you want to check to see if the connection became slightly loose, otherwise you can just fill your gas tank and reset your temporary milage gage (that's the little black button near your RPM meter) and remember how many miles you get per tank.

Fuel gauge

there is little else that causes this except the fuel guage sending unit in the gas tank.
