2002 Mercury Grand Marquis Logo

I have a 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis with 68K miles. Sometimes I smell engine oil in the cabin and outside when I get out. This is usually when idling and when I come to a stop. I don't see a leak and the car does not seem to be losing oil when I check the dipstick. Took it to my mechanic and of course the car didn't emit any smell when they had it and they found no leaks either. This does not happen every time but often enough to make me wonder if there is a problem. Any ideas what is going on?

It would appear that the Crankcase breather pipe has become detached. It will be clearly visible, once you get the hood up.

Thank you for your reply. I checked on this and the breather tube is secure so that must not be it. I checked around looking for anything loose that I could reach but didn't find anything. The oil smell does not smell burned, it just smells like motor oil that is hot like it should be. My engine temp is great when this happens so I am at a loss. My biggest concern is that something small could turn into something big and expensive to fix.

Location of cabin filter of 1998 mercury marquis.web site won't let me enter the proper year???

usually behind the glove box. see if the glove box can be tilted forward to be removed. if so, the filter is behind it. if not, could be outside of car, passenger side, under the plastic piece between windshield wiper and windshield.

Theres oil mixing with my antifreeze, why i smell antifreeze inside my car while driving

You could have two problems. First, does the engine require more oil than usual, is the oil level always low ? Does the transmission lose oil ? Could possibly be the trans. cooler in the rad. is cracked. Usually with a blown head gasket you get coolant into the engine, or burn it. ( white smoke ) Has the engine ever over heated ? On the smell part, this could be the heater core is leaking. Have a pressure test on the rad. to try and help find the problems.

93 mercury grand marquis oil pan leak

Sometimes you can remove the engine mounts and jack the engine up high enough to remove the pan. If it is really rusty it is hard to get any type of epoxy or metal repair to stick.

1996 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS WITH OCCASIONAL SLUGGISHNESS ON ACCELERATION AND SEEMS LIKE IT MAY BE USING MORE GAS THAN USUAL. HAS BEEN WELL TAKEN CARE OF, REG. OIL CHANGES, NEW FUEL FILTER 2 YRS AGO-DR

I would use 10W40 in the 96 and 5W20 or 30 in the 2002.

For the 96 with sluggishness, you need to gently clean the MAF sensor wires with carb cleaner and a toothbrush. It is in the air intake tube. After cleaning, disconnect the battery for 1/2 hour, then reconnect so the computer can relearn the clean sensor. Drive for 10 miles, it will run rough until it relearns.

Section 03-14: Engine Controls, Electronic 1996 Town Car, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis Workshop Manual
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor The mass air flow sensor (MAF sensor) (12B579):
  • is mounted on the corner of the engine air cleaner (ACL) (9600).
  • uses a hot wire sensing element to measure the amount of air entering the engine; air passing over the hot wire causes it to cool.
  • sends out an analog voltage signal to the PCM (12A650) to determine the intake air mass. The PCM will then calculate the required fuel injector pulse width to provide the desired air/fuel ratio.
The mass air flow sensor hot wire sensing element and housing are calibrated as a unit and must be serviced as a complete assembly.
