Never have a trans flushed. Unless it was at a dealer, the wrong fluid was most likely put in, Unless you saw them put HONDA ATF-Z1 fluid in. Check the fluid with the engine off.

1990 jeep Cherokee limited 4.0 4x4. auto tranny quit pulling, all at once; no warning, any ideas?

Look at the shift solenoid or oil screen/filter. Oil bad need flush and new oil. Over heater clogged oil cooler. Burned tranny clutches. Start on the oil

When temps are below freezing and the car is cold, there is a delayed engagement when shifting between neutral and reverse and drive. This happened after I had the transmission flushed.

Make sure the fluid level is right. You need to check the trans fluid level in park with the vehicle running and at operating tempature. Is there any warranty implied from the place that did the trans flush? If the fluid level is correct and it continues to delay (slip) you can try using mercon 5 transmission fluid in the trans it is a thicker transmission fluid with a higher tempature range and will tend to smooth out the slipping issues in the colder weather.

I have over 100,000 miles on my 2002 Jeep. I bought the jeep from a friend. The jeep gran cherokee is in excellent condition and very well taken care of. Question I want to get the transmission fluid...

Some people have complained that after flushing the trans, it failed. But I believe they waited until the trans was acting up and then had it done. Also, a flush is when they hook up a pump and use 5 gallons of new fluid to push out the old. Transmissions have a filter in them that is not replaced this way, and I wonder if that has something to do with it. I have always dropped the pan, changed the filter and gasket, cleaned off the magnet in the pan (another area a flush does not get) and then refilled with new fluid. You may have some old fluid left over, but 90% new is better than 100% old, and you get rid of the dirty filter.

HiI got a Pathfinder and it's starting to not reverse. When it's cold and just getting started it's ok, but when it warmss up it's a no go unless I reb the engine up and it'll kick in. Do you have any idea...

the fluid is thicker when it is cold, leading me to believe 1 of 2 things are happening.
1. The fluid is so old and worn you may have lost viscosity (if you are not low on fluid, a trans flush and fill with new filer may be in place.
2. The clutch packs and control valve may have a faulty o-ring causing bleed by of trans fluid.
I hope the solution rests in #1. the major sign would be a wining noise and a foul smell (burning metal) meaning that number 2 has occured. My past experience with these vehicle recommend that you have the trans flushed and filled and add a stabilizer such as Lucas trans stabilizer(works great, you may even be able to add just a bottle of this when the car is running and trans is hot to help the situation), CD2 is also another brand I have found to work pretty good.

Stumble driveing in high gear

First, check your transmission fluid. If it is low, you should fill it immediately. If it is full, but brown in color, it should be changed. A likely cause of the problem is a clogged filter. If you have not had the trans. filter changed on 60,000 or more miles, do so. It is a good idea to have the fluid flushed and refilled at this point as well. You may want to consider refilling with a synthetic fluid. This will tend to increase transmission lifespan. Just make sure the fluid is compatible with your vehicle. Mercon V is a good bet for this. Finally, there is a product called Lucas Transmission Fix. I use this in everything. I recommend using a bottle when refilling the transmission, no matter what kind of fluid you use. Put the Lucas in after 2-3 qts of transmission fluid, so as not to clog the pump at startup.

My transmission fluid is muddyish and slightly burnt smelling. Should I flush?

it would be a good idea to flush the radiator and refill with new fluid.

Grinding noise

I believe what you're saying is that after your car has been in park and you put it in gear to drive it makes a grinding noise for about 30 miles. I recommend checking you transmission fluid level and adding fluid as needed. You should do this fluid check while the engine is warm and car is idling. Since you have an 88 you probably have a lot of miles on it. I've had very good luck using Slick 50 High Mileage Automatic Transmission Treatment. A bottle of this costs around $15. If none of this works it may be time to take it into the shop or trade it in.

Transmission stops working when hot

You are probably having ATF bubbles flowing through your tranny either from overfill or by using cheap ATF / the wrong atf. Consider a drain and refill 3 times (driving for 5 minutes in between a drain and refill. This time only use dealship ATF and I guarantee you the problem will go away.
