Warm the car up till the cooling fan comes on then about another 3 to 5 min. shut the engine off for about 10 min. keep repeating till the coolant flows. The upper radiator hose will get hot close to the radiator and the air from the fans is hot. Leave the radiator cap loose or off while doing this and keep the antifreeze full. Be very carefull antifreeze can go up to 230 degrees and servely burnt If you are getting air bubbles and the antifreez doesn't go down you have combustion getting into the cooling system. The most common reason for this is a blown head gasket.

2002-ford-taurus-runing-hot-replace-radiator-water-pump-thermostat-radiator-cap-driving-about-40-miles-get-hot

How hot does it get in degrees F? Does the cooling fan turn on? Is the coolant boiling over?
As far as your temp gage, maybe you have air in the system? I would think as far as you have driven, if you didn't bleed the system, it should have worked it's way out?
You could have combustion gasses getting into the coolant because of gasket issue?

How to bleed coolant system on 2002 ford taurus

There are no bleed ports on Ford engines. If you are having trouble with air in the system, try parking uphill and running the engine as you top off the radiator. Be careful if the engine is hot, but you will have to let it warm up to get the air out.

Where is the coolant bleeder on a 1998 ford taurus 3.0 engine

You can bleed the system of air by removing the radiator cap while the engine is cold. Turn the heater on high and let the vehicle run until it reaches operating temperature. The thermostat will open several times and purge the system of air. Feel the top radiator hose occasionally until it heats up. Don't forget to replace the radiator cap.

HOW DO I BLEED THE AIR FROM A 1999 FORD TAURUS COOLING SYSTEM ?

Most cars do not need bleeding from the cooling system because the radiator is above the engine, and the filler tank if above that.
Also as the engine gets warm, air tends to burp out and get replaced by water from the reservoir.
About all you can do is squeeze the top radiator hose, to milk any air out of it.

2002 ford taurus. Radiator overflows but, temp gauge not hot.

It could be both your thermostat and water pump, it could also be an air lock in your cooling system. One way or another, I think pressure is building up in part of the system because its not circulating properly.

When its cool, take the top off your reservoir, give the bottom hose to your radiator a good few squeezes, see if the water goes down a little, if it does, you moved something on and probably cured it.

If not, run the engine up, to get it warm and bleed off any air in the system. (Assuming there are bleed taps in the system)

If that also does nothing, I reckon its your water pump. And if your changing that, I'd suggest changing the thermostat at the same time.
