Hi - There are at least 7 different diagrams or configurations for a 97 Cavalier... it depends upon your engine. It would be easiest to answer your question if you could provide the engine number and the VIN of the car.
Diagram should be under the hood
The auto tensioneris down low and dificult to get to.
If it has not been changed in a while you will need a long thin push stick and a serpentine tool.
Push on the belt hard at the auto adjuster and pop the belt off the smooth pully (located top).
hook up the serpentine belt tool and then mount the new belt
there are a number of diagrams on the car its self. if u open ur hood u can see the altinater just under it there should b a diagram of the belt and usualy they have them on the hood underside or right there next to the radeator
ase mechanic:
there is a diagram somewhere under the hood that gives you belt routing and where the tensioner is and which way it swings to take belt off. sometimes its a 15mm and the longer the wrench the easier it is to swing it.
there will be a diagram of the routing of the belt on the bottom side of the hood. You need to specify what engine you have also. One common thing is the tension pulley, you will need to pry on it to relieve tension in order to put the belt on. Make sure you save the alternator for last as you can get to it a lot easier that the rest.
