Question about 1996 Chevrolet C1500

My fuel pump relay overheats to the point it actually melts the plastic around one of the posts ... what should i do?

You need a new socket! get what they call a 'pigtail' for the relay. The terminals like to push out and cause low voltage which melts the plastic from the heat that is produced.

Replaced bad fuel pump. Still will not start. Only 6 volts at the pump relay. Bypassing the relay indicated pump is working and plenty of pressure. Checked all the fuses all are good. Any ideas?


Year make and model ?
You should have two hot circuits to the relay. One is for the pump and the other is for the coil of the relay. Usually power comes from the key switch.

96 chevy truck, fuel pump relay switch (located under the hood, driver's side wheel well) keeps shorting out and melting fuse panel


I would replace the fuel pump and the fuel pump connector, both have problems in this year that cause excessive current draw and blow the fuse and overheat the system. If the relay socket terminals are discolored from heat that must be replaced as well. Of course before replacing any parts have a GM dealer confirm the problems i have guessed are to the cause.

1998 ford explorer fuel pump does not come on every time when it does it will start then die out


A double whammy, eh?
a loose connection could cause both conditions (intermittent pump, then stalling).
Address the intermittent pump operation first: Pull off the connector at the pump and thoroughly check it's condition and the wires in it. Look for loose terminals, melted plastic or wire insulation, anything that might cause loss of good connection. You may have to look for other connectors going back to the fuel pump relay (probably in the fusebox near the battery, but may be elsewhere around the engine). Possible you may have a faulty relay. Also possible that your pump is on its last legs, starting to fail. Good luck.

The fuel pump relay is twice fused. The relay power is provided through a fusible link connected at the starter post that the positive battery cable connects to; and there is an in-line fuse inside a cube shaped plastic box near the relay. Either the fusible link or the inline fuse is blown, or there is a break in the wire that runs from the stater post to the relay.

possible fuel pump shorting out problem, disconnect fuel pump wiring connector located around tank area under vehicle & turn key on again. if no more clicking from relay or theft warning stops. then change fuel pump, and check the short wiring harness to fuel pump for overheat signs.

What ever the relay controls is most likely the problem,maybe the fuel pump.

I have an 89 ford bronco. The inline fuel pump is not getting power. Where does the pump get its power from? Where is the fuel pump relay, and where does it get its power from.


The pump gets it's power from the fuel pump relay under the hood driver side fender well there should be three relais under the plastic cover there is a windshield wiper motor relay a fuel pump relay and i forget the third but swap relays around and see watch you get

Both fuel pump relays run hot. I have replaced both of them. The truck started and ran for about 30 minutes then quit. I replaced the relays and it ran for a few minutes and quit again.


You could have a bad fuel pump relay switch. The fuel pumpmag-glass_10x10.gif relay switch gets the fuel pump running in the vehicle during the start cycle. The terms fuel pump relay and fuel pump relay switch are used interchangeably. The fuel pump relay begins its job when the automobile operator turns to the ignition on, but before the motor is actually running. At that point, the fuel pump relay in some cars sends a signal to the ignition switch, which in turn sends a signal to the fuel pump to turn on. Others fuel pump relays have actual circuitry inside of them that receive the ignition signal and directly signal the fuel pump to engage.

Ecm fuse blows my work up to month


The first thing you should do is to locate the oil pressure switch/sending unit.

It's a single wire terminal with plastic connect sensor from the engine block.


This oil switch is about $30.


This switch serves two functions.

1) provide oil pressure reading

2) disable the fuel pump relay in event of oil pressure loss.

When this switch is failing to provide the correct pressure to the ECU. The wiring harness can overheat and eventually create a short.

ECM B blow is because the harness is grounding/shorting.

DO NOT drive the truck until you change the oil pressure switch.

After you change the switch,you should spend sometime to inspect the wiring between the fuel pump relay,ECU and fuel pump.

Fuel pump relay hot


You could have a loose connection going to the relay. Loose or bad connections cause amperage to rise causing heat to rise. Check the plug holes where the relay pins plug in. Check for blackened metal or melting plastic around the pins. If so, check under the relay box for burnt wires, etc. and repair.
