There is a upper shaft support bearing that can come apart or if you have a tilt column they were known for the bolts that hold the bowl to the column housing coming loose. Either way the steering wheel has to come off and the locking plate and turn signal switch have to be moved out of the way to check them. Good Luck

Loose tilt steering column 1991 s10 blazer.

There are 4 bolts around a ratchet ball and gear mech. that come loose due to holding the wheel as one gets in and out of the vehicle. It is a tedious job, to pull the column (you do not have to completely remove the column but almost) and tighten the bolts. I will tell you to do a search for steering column knuckle repair, you will find a site with pictures and detailed instructions. I will search also, and post the site here for you when I find it. I had the same problem and used that site for instructions to repair mine. I just can not find it right now... Hope this helps Fix Ya up.

Hello, I got a 89 mustang LX and the steering is very unresponsive. It has several inches of free play in the wheel before I get a response, I already checked power steering fluid and it is fine. -Cheers

This is more of a suggestion than an answer. You need to check on your steering column under the hood. Start your car an have someone turn steering wheel back and forth. Look at the steering knuckle at the end of your column. I am currently having the same issue, my steering wheel has alot of play to it and the knuckle is worn out. Im not sure if steering knuckle is the correct name but its the joint that connects your steering column to your rack an pinion i believe.

My steering wheel has lots of play up and down , side to side i removed steering wheel i'm stuck on how to get the rest apart to tighten bolts in steering column

you're best to remove the entire column and do it in the bench, if you can get a diagram it will help a lot, assembilng a steering column is tricky, some parts are spring loaded and others only assemble in in the proper order, you got the steering column out, now you will need a tool to depress the lock plate, remove the c clip and the plate, then remove the signal arm and fourway button, remove the signal switch plate remember how everything came out,you should be able to remove the steerin shafe and get at the four bolts holding the tilt mechanism, four reverse torx bolts, reassemble and install, good luck

89 old ciera cross ref.

Column shift tilt wheel:

Ciera '89, '90
Buick Century '89, '90
Chevrolet Celebrity '89, '90
Pontiac 6000 '89, '98

Column shift w/o tilt

Olds Ciera '89, '90
Buick Century '89, '90
Chevrolet Celebrity '89, '90
Pontiac 6000 '89, '90

Floor shift...same options. Tilt and/or no tilt is a matter of preference as the wiring harness is the same, so either will work. Floor shift is floor shift only,'89 and '90 Ciera, Century, Celebrity, 6000.

Hope this helped.

Windshield wiper lever broke off steering column in 89 Jeep wrangler. How do you fix

If it's a multi-function switch or a single function arm, you will need to remove the steering wheel to access the attachment points. If you never have done this, get a basic manual such as haynes or chilton. Both have decent instructions to guide you and after, they have lots of good info to help with other problems as well. Since it's an 89, it's doubtful if it has an airbag...that makes things a lot less complicated.
