You need to look down on the brake pedal at the brake switch and see if the wires are broken witch is very common if not the switch probably needs to be replaced.

It is not the neutral safety switch, it only prevents the car from starting in gear. It is the solenoid on the shifter itself, you have two switches, one is the key lock itself, the key has to be on, and the other is the brake pedal , as you know, has to be engaged. The brake pedal switch is a little box like thing on the pedal or hitting the pedal, it also has the brake light switch there too, so, if you don't know which it is, disconnect one and see if the brake lights work, you will know which it is, If you can get the wires off the shift lock, put them together, you have to find out which way the switch works, it either breaks the circuit or closes it, but it needs to klik the solenoid in order to pull out of park. you can also take the cover off the shifter, easier on the floor, and remove the solenoid itself. It should be OK till you can get the switch fixed or whatever. It is usually the brake switch, the key switch is rare. Hope this helps.

I have tried to unlock steering back and forth and turning the key, but it just won't unlock

Hi Neil:
Check the gear shift lever to make sure it is fully in the park position. Then turn the steering wheel to relieve pressure on the key, and try to start the engine. Once it starts, press on the brake pedal, turn the steering towards the resistance, and try to get it out of park.

What would cause key won't turn, steering wheel locked, car in park, brake hard

It sounds like the steering lock has gone hard due to turning the wheel after key is out, turn the key and steering wheel at the same time and see if this releases the lock. Hope this helps

1998 Ford Escort steering wheel lock will not unlock. Seems jammed.

The steering wheel was turned when the key was removed. So when you try to turn on the key, turn the wheel one way and the other way to release the pressure on the key. The key should turn ok.
Hope this helps.

Ignition stuck key won't turn to start car!

Gear shift is not totally in the park position - had the same problem with a 2011 Acura TL - a rubber band kept the gear shift lever from totally seating in the park position.

Can't get out of park, steering wheel lock

The park lock out is powered by the brake light circuit, so 1st thing to do is check and see if the brake lights work, if not you have found the problem. Repair the brake lights as needed. You can over ride the lock out by turning the key in the the switch just short of the spring loaded position that starts the car while wiggling the shifter.
