If you mean the cooling fan on the radiator, the computer grounds the fan relay when the fan is needed. If the engine temp reaches 220 degrees or you turn on the ac and the fan does not come on, check the relay first.
Hi. Your radiator fan motor may be seized. Should ingage between 95-100 degrees when you parked on idle after achieving full working temp. If it doesn't, check fuse first and than relay responsible for cooling fan( you can find cavity in your owner manual. Let me know. The reason you car is ok while driving is the air going thru your radiator. When you stoped or parked for longer time with no speed there is nothing to cool your radiator. Fix it asap or eventually will cause engine over hit and seize.
Check Thermostat wires and last the fan one of them might be telling you is shutting down completely this cars will last forever if you maintain correctly ,i had a 91 nissan altima drove from LA to Ensenada every weekend no problems at all.
It's suppose to stay on for awhile, this cools the engine down while its just sitting. If it stays on for hours then you need to check your fan relay. Good Luck.
A lot of cars have the fans running after the fact, they just cool down the temp a little, have you checked your coolant lately? Keep an eye on the temp gage on the dash, make sure it doesn't go very far, It should be very constant when running.
You need to diagnose the problem. The fan is doing what it is being told to do by the computer. You stated the temp gage on the dash is in the HOT position. Either the engine is very hot and the fan needs to run to remove heat even after it is shut off or the gage, coolant sensor or temp sender is defective. Try running it temporarly without a thermostat and see what happens, you may have bought a defective thermostat.
