The hesitation of your 2006 PT Cruiser when putting it in reverse may be due to several reasons, such as a clogged transmission filter, low transmission fluid levels, or a faulty transmission solenoid. It is recommended that you take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic for diagnosis and repair to ensure that the issue is addressed properly.
sounds like you have a manual transmission. ? Worn Clutch plates will give these symptoms The clutch plates rub together and provide connection between the gear box and the drive shaft if not worn. Also check the cable for the clutch is not loose and needs a surclip to hold it in at the firewall. Check if Hydraulic Clutch that there is adequate clutch fluid if low might have leaking clutch master cyclinder
I have experienced this in a car I owned. Not a lot of fun . Resulted in needing a Tow to repair garage and new clutch was AUD $1200 a couple of years ago.

It sounds like you have a bad motor or transmission mount. Open your hood, and have a friend start your vehicle, and put it into drive. Observe the engine to see what is vibrating. Matt
music to my ears,YOU take your car to a VW dealer to get it on the diagnosic machine,THEN you take it to your favourite mech to work on it.the diagnostic computer only gives codes,it dont tell you whats wrong,so get a written report done.i am a fully qualified tech and i get my own done this way,as its cheaper.........(mickey mouse diagnostic computers only give codes NOT itemised faults)
This could be an issue with the shift solenoid , but can also be caused by low fluid due to a leak, check your fluid. Is there a check engine light on, if there is it could be a solenoid issue.
whats the fluid smell like? when was the last time it was serviced? where is fluid on stick when hot? low on fluid could do what you discribed, but chances are trans needs rebuilt. if fluid smells burnt, rebuild or replacement.
MAKE SURE YOUR TRANSMISSION FLUID IS FULL/ADJUST YOUR LINKAGE SO REVERSE LINES UP/REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION FILTER AND FLUID.NEVER PAY $100S-$1000S TILL YOU TRY THE ABOVE BECAUSE THEY WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY.
