When I go to start the engine and turn the key it just clicks one time, when i turn the key. What is the easiest way to get to the starter of a 1997 GMC Savana Conversion Van. The battery is in good shape.
Check your battery connection's, if when it clicks one time do the lights go off? Then more then likely bad battery connection. With light switch on move battery connection if lights come on you found your problem.

possible problem is a weak fuel pump. The fuel pump relay will engage for about five seconds each time the key is turned to the start position. If the fuel pump is weak then there is nor enough pressure to fire the injectors until the key is recycled several times. You should connect a fuel pressure tester to the fuel system to see if that is what is happening. Try turning the key on and off several times waiting 3 or 4 seconds between turns and then all the way to start.
Hi, I am a mechanic. As I understand you, It sounds to me like the solenoid on your starter is miss connecting. It will do as you say when you turn the key to the start position. sometimes it will just click every time you turn the key to start it will click. then out of the blue it will start. usually this is not so bad when the engine is warm. You can test the starter yourself to check it. You will need to remove it though. Don't forget to disconnect the battery first. Hope this helps
if its a single click every time you turn the key to the start position than the starter is probably bad. If its multiple clicks when you hold the key in the start position its probably a weak battery.
check for lose wire connection off wires on solinoid and battery solinoid is connected on stater motor normally on the side off engine at the back off engine
It sounds like you do have a relay problem try switching relays around that have the same part number start with the starter relay when switching the make sure the key is off each time
if the clicking is repeated with out you releasing the key then the battry is in need of charging or replacing, if its a one click each time then the starter motor is faulty.
You either have a bad solenoid on your starter OR a bad ignition switch as these are the only two things that can cause the symptom you describe... I lean to the solenoid first, RARELY does an ignition switch sieze up in the start position but it is a possibility. Several national chain parts stores can test the starter for you (GM starters have the starter solenoid mounted directly to the starter and you need to remove the starter to get to it, so you would take the whole unit in to test it... REMEMBER to disconnect the battery first!)
is the engine actually cranking when it doesnt start or do you hear just one "click" each time you turn the key? if the engine is cranking, i would suspect a fuel problem, possibly fuel filter if it wasnt changed when the fuel pump was done. if it is not cranking and you hear one "click" upon turning the key, i would suspect faulty starter or connection problem.
