98 Grand prix and v belt keeps breaking or coming off I have the small engine

If it a serpintine belt (meaning one belt runs everything) and it comes off on its own its time for a new belt to install new or reinstall old one . All cars have abelt routing diagram if not google your car and year asking for belt diagram. Locate tensioner usually turns with wrench ( socket or box end is best) route the belt according to dia. leave tensioner for last rotate pully with wrench to get belt over release tension on wrench thats all there is to it. But if belt keeps coming off usually indicates new belt is needed could also need tensioner pully its a good idea to replace both at the same time

A belt diagram for a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix, what engine? i will check it out, okay the 1997 grand prix came with a 3.1 or 3.8 engine.

No these engines have rev-limiters on them to keep engine from over reving and breaking camshafts and other parts.

there must be a bad pulley, or something out of line, remove the belt and spin each pulley to make sure they spin freely, then shake each one to make sure they dont have a lot of play,take a good look at the waterpump pulley and ac pulley, also the tensioner starts to bend outward when it gets weak,

I didnt have to remove my alternator, I just used a 15 mm wrench to remove the left-hand threaded bolt holding the tensioner on. hope this helps

If your belt was not properly routed it could be the issue. About 30 miles driving would be enough time to drain the battery, and your problem may very well be related to a improperly routed belt.

If the seat belt light comes on intermittently with the belt buckled, it may have a bad switch in the buckle or a loose connection @ the switch. This may also set a diagnostic trouble code in the srs control module & keep the srs airbag light on.
