There is one before, and another after, the catalytic converter. Both are fairly cheap through many vendors on ebay. Replacing them is not hard if you have a lift and a nice long wrench. If you have neither take them to an exhaust shop and will cost less than $50 and take about a half hour. Keep away from Saturn dealer for this.

It could be the oxygen sensors but when you said there is a bad odor I would bet that you have a bad EGR valve. It will send a code for the oxygen sensor if there is problems with the EGR valve. A lot of the time the smell is like rotten eggs when you have a bad EGR.

SOURCE: Need to know how to check the oxygen sensors on a

Don't know if this will answer it. O2 sensors send info to the computer to make adjustments to the emissions system. Over time the O2 sensors fail which cause the computer to light the "Check engine" light. Originally the "Check engine" light was dedicated to an emission system fault. Now manufactures use it for a variety of abnormalities. To know what the "check engine" light means you have to either take it to a mechanic or buy a OBDII scanner (around $100) and read the code yourself. I like to read my own codes. These scanners are good for all modern cars. Instructions are included EZ to follow.
Long story short, don't worry about it the check engine light will come on when O2 sensor fails. Happy motoring!

Testimonial: "Thank you the info was helpful about the scanner."

How to replace the oxygen sensor

There are two sensors, one on the exhaust manifold the other on the catalytic converter. The exhaust manifold is the easy one to replace, the other the car needs to be on a lift.

Changing the O2 sensor will improve you gas mileage,

I have a 2000 year saturn sl..it now has a 1996 single overhead cam..this 1996 motor is compatible with the 2000 saturn? the tranny seems to slip with the 1996 motor? maybe wire priblem to tranny?

When the engine was replaced the sensors off the 2000 should have gone on the 96. The engines are basically the same, but the sensors are what can cause all sorts of problems.

I need a new oxygen sensor for my 96 saturn sl series twin cam 16valve. i was wondering where it's located at and if i would need a new egr valve also and what kinds would you recommend?

What is wrong with the O2 Sensor?
How was it tested?
Why are you mentioning the EGR, and what do you mean by what kind. It either fits your vehicle or it doesn't.
What are the vehicles problems, before you throw parts at it?

1996 SATURN P0420 CODE

ok knowing the code is what its all about..- code 0420 is
"Catalyst efficiency below threshold"
This indicates that the oxgygen sensor downstream from the cat is sensing high levels of oxygen after the cat. The catalyst is supposed to use all the oxygen to catalyse the nasty **** in your exhaust. A high level downstream from the cat indicates either the cat needs to be replace (MOST LIKELY) or you have a faulty sensor.
A faulty sensor would bring up other codes on your scan too, so I am afraid a new Catalyst is likely the fix. They last about 120-150K miles so if you're in that range there ya go....
hope that gets it for you...pls rate me if you get a mo.
