I took my Durango in for allignment and the tech. said I need new ball joints. They look like they are fairly simple to replace. Are there any surprizes I will likely run into, or trick I need to know...

If you don't unload the coil springs correctly you can kill yourself or hurt yourself very bad.If you have never done this before you will need someone to show you how to do it correctly because it has the potential to be deadly. The ball joints are easy to change if they are bolt on but getting to them is the hard part.So be very careful!!!!!!!!!!

Need to replace the lower ball joints in my 2002 Dodge Durango SXT. Receiving conflicting advise. Some say that I have to replace the whole control arm with new ball joint. Others say that I can press the...

It looks like if you buy the joint from Chrysler then it comes complete with the arm however there are aftermarket companies that make just the ball joint which can be pressed in and out. It's fairly common for a manufacturer to offer the joint only as a part of the arm while an aftermarket company will offer the ball joint for sale seperately. A hint on these: Buy the best quality ball joint you can get an grease them on a regular basis. Lower ball joints take quite a beating and there is a big quality difference between cheap and good joints.

Removal & Installation The upper ball joints cannot be replaced separately. If the ball joints become worn or damaged, the upper control arm must be replaced.

I don't understand what you mean by a bolt over!!!, But when they did all that other stuff did they happend to chk. the ball joints, I have a 2001 durango, and i recieved a letter from chys. that there was a recall on the ball joints on durangos and dakotas so the dealer change them at no charge to me. Sound to me to be a ball joint issue, at least it would be worth looking into.

I have to replace the Upper & Lower Ball-Joints on my '03 5.9L V-8 Durango, do i have to also change the control arm or can i do only the ball joints?

You should be able to just replace the ball joints, should not need to replace the comntrol arms. Hope this helps

99 dodge durango needs ball joints

Well if you get an alignment after you put the new ones in you should be alright. As far as these new ball joints they probably just come pre-pressed on the arms and if thats the case then you will have to mess with the coil springs in which case you will need a special tool and you will have to align it all just right or you will have problems later on, i would just stick with the unpressed ball joints also make sure u have something to press them with like a heavy duty vise or a press itself don't use a hammer cause this will damage them.

Replacing a '98 Grand Cherokees ball joints

The only parts you need are the ball joints, upper and lower, a total of 4, if you need all 4. As far as tools, you'll need wrenches, a removal and installer tool, the ball joints are pressed into the control arms, and a ball joint to steering knuckle seperator tool.Without those special tools, you will never get them changed, if you do it yourself.
