My 2002 Dodge Neon had trouble yesterday, running as if it had water in the fuel line. It would run very roughly, nearly stalling, then run more smoothly, alternativing. (The day was snowy and very wet, very damp.) Last night and today it seems to run smoothly, but the "check engine" light is on and it makes a "ding" sound every few minutes.

CHECK ALL OTHER DASH LIGHTS,MAKE SURE THE OIL PRESSURE IS GOOD,AND THE TEMP,AND BATTERY VOLTAGE,BETTER YET,CHECK THE ALTERNATOR OUT PUTIt should read 13.65 volts,to 14.25 volts with engine running, and headlights on,and high blower motor. The ding is a warning,if all this checks out, have the codes read to see if it will narrow the problem down.Auto zone can do this for free. There maybe moister in the fuel, try an additive called heet.

Why does my 2002 dodge neon idle rough when cold any other time runs smooth ?

Sounds like it just is not getting enough fuel when cold. Try using a bottle of injector cleaner from the Dodge dealer. Make sure it shows naptha on the label and do NOT get any on the paint.

If that doesn't fix it be alert to temporary rough idle when stopping at stoplights. That will indicate you will need to have it scanned.

Rough idle on 2002 Dodge Neon

Without trouble codes you are fishing in the dark. If the engine has a cylinder that is dead at idle from a fuel injector or ignition problem, it should have a code for a miss on that cylinder. A mechanical problem like a burned valve could cause the problem without setting a code. Have you checked compression on all 4 cylinders ? ?

Oil light on; running rough; sputtering and wants to stall when stepping on gas

sounds like u have either low oil in engine or a faulty oil pressure switch, the running rough would be caused from a number of reasons, plugged air filter or a plugged fuel filter. hope this will help!!!

You need an egr valve/egr valve control solenoid. You can get them through Napa, Carquest or Dodge. You may also need the coolant temperature sensor (for the ECM) as it may have damaged this in the process. Very common problem on the 4 and 6 cyl Dodge engines.

Hope that helps.
