08 ford focus TDI driving sluggish, esp light came on, car went limp and then cut out....sat for a few minutes restarted and drive perfectly....happening often

How many miles on it? Coil-over-plugs and spark plugs may need changed. They can throw electrical interference which can put you in Fail-Safe mode. Happened to me.
If car has over 70K, change the Coil-over plugs and spark plugs. Don't forget to change a fuel filter every 30K also.

My ford focus tdi 2003 cant select 1st,3rd or 5th gears.

Car is in limp in mode unless you have the tools to work on automatic transmission you will need to take it to a transmission shop. Of course you can check oil level but I suspect you have other issues.
