Is there enough coolant in the system? It sounds like it's low.

Check the fan and water pump one of these is possibly ur problem when ur at idle there is no heat load and the radiator can dissipate that when ur driving causes more heat if fan isnt working the car wont cool same if problem is water pump at idle pump may be able to move some of the hot anti-freeze but when driving may not be pumping it thru radiator to cool

I had my 2006 grand prix fix 3 times for the tempature gage and stilss the gage goes over the 3 line

I think you should start thinking it might not be the gage itself but >Problem with the wires in the circuit itself Also warm car up take a thermometer & check coolant tempature cross referance with temp gauge in the car

My 2000 pontiac grand prix, the Engine temp heats up when at idle, returns to normal temp when at high speed and now it is almost at the overheating level whether i'm ideling or driving, Is it the...

The initial problem points to the radiator fan(s) not running at any road speed. Check the fan(s) for noise-free turning by hand. Check fan fuse and relay (swap with similar relay). Turn on the air conditioner which should immediately turn on the fan(s). Overheating while driving could very well be the thermostat--you will need to drain the cooling system before replacing the unit. Blow out the radiator core with compressed air from the engine side to remove bugs and other debris first. Hope this helps!
