Look at the top of your Brake pedal for a switch. It needs to send a signal for the brake lights and the release of the gearshift/starter solenoid lockout.
Drivers feet often move or break this switch and a good indication the problem is there is having no brake lights.
It is a bit odd that you can move the gearshift at all without the signal from the brake switch. The idea of having these extra parts is to prevent the van from starting without your foot on the brake or getting out of Park without your foot on the brake.
So you may have to fix more than just the brake switch. There may be a misalignment or broken part on the shifter lockout.
There is a brake light switch operated via the brake pedal. Once the switch wears out there is nothing to activate the brake lights. You will have to have the brake light switch replaced if a check of the vehicles wiring for the lighting is shown to be all in order.
Check your brake lights to see if they work. The shift interlock works off of the brake light circuit. If the brake lights don't work it could be the brake light fuse, the brake pedal switch. Check fuses #21 and #27 in the fuse panel under the dash.
If the fuses are good and the brake lights work, then the shift interlock solenoid has a problem.
A work-around for this is to turn the key toward the "On" position just enough to unlock the steering wheel, but not far enough to light up the lights in the dash. Then shift the shifter into neutral to start. This will get you to a shop without towing.
There is brake switch that is located on the brake oedal bracket, just to the right of the steering column mount. Youl need to remove the left side under dash panel to get to the switch and connector.
If the brake lights are inoperative, check the fuse.
If fuse is Ok, check the voltage at the light bulb socket when switch is not presed and when is presed. If there is no voltage back to the light bulb replace brake switch.
thier is problem with brake switch on master cylendre leaks brake fluid on top a abs madule and short the wires need to change switch, plug ,and abs madule
I have a 2001 Ford F150, my brake lights dont work. Ive replaced the bulbs, checked the fuses, and the brake switch on side of the brake pedal was replaced. I still dont have any brake lights. My third brake light works fine, along with my running lights, flashers, blinkers.
same thing with my 2001 windstar lx, mine was the brake on / brake off switch next the the master cylinder had brake fluid on it and was shorting out. replaced the switch and everything works fine
