How do I set the idel on a 2001 Jeep Cherokee?

    Thanks emissionwiz,
To clarify, at times the jeep runs smooth and at other times it stalls unless the gas pedal is manipulated. While sitting idle it won't stay running. What action needs to be taken to repair or replace the computer/PCM?

  • Anonymous Nov 22, 2009

I don't want to replace anything if I don't need to, I just want the problem repiared as effeciently as possible and with as little expense as possible. I have no knowledge of Jeeps or how to repair the problem I have listed. Obviously you have the knowledge and your expertise is appreciated. What would you suggest my course of action be at this point? What is the method to clean both the throttle body or the ISCBV?

The vehicle won't idle at times. Sometimes it will idle with no problem and then at times it won't stay running. Just looking for the best way to resolve the problem. Any suggestions?

No check engine light is on while it's running.

Try this procedure, fixes most idle problems.
Here are the common cause of surges, cold stalls, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

As I said in your last question, there are very few reasons you need to go near it. A good auto electrician with a professional grade scan tool computer can diagnose the ECM for faults in about 20 to 30 minutes. It is not a job for 'let's try changing this'. If it is bad, a new one needs a tech to install as it has to be programmed with the VIN Number and mileage and set up.

Like I said, odds are air fuel mixture. So if it's worse, you're probally right on not enough fuel. So either fuel filter or pump.
