The Brake System Indicator normally comes on when you turn the ignition switch ON (II). It is a reminder to check the parking brake. It comes on and stays lit if you do not fully release the parking brake. If it comes on at any other time, it indicates a problem with the vehicle's brake system. In most cases, the problem is a low fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir. Press lightly on the brake pedal to see if it feels normal. If it does, check the brake fluid level the next time you stop at a service station.
However, if the brake pedal does not feel normal, you should take immediate action. Because of the brake system's dual-circuit design, a problem in one part of the system will still give you braking at two wheels. You will feel the brake pedal go down much farther before the vehicle begins to slow down, and you will have to press harder on the pedal. The distance needed to stop will be much longer.
Hope this helps you.

I have a 2007 yukon denali xl, I got my front brakes and right wheel hub changed. When he got doney brake lights in the back of the truck wI'll not shut off. Brake light switch did nothing to help..

Who put the front brakes an wheel hub bearing on the vehicle ? A qualified repair shop ? A friend ? The front brakes an wheel hub would have nothing to do with the brake lights . An the brake light switch is an input to the BCM - body control module .
Stop Lamps
When the driver presses the brake pedal, the switch contacts open and battery positive voltage is interrupted to the BCM. The BCM then supplies voltage to both the turn/stop lamp supply voltage circuit and trailer rear turn/stop lamp supply voltage circuits. The BCM also supplies voltage to the CHMSL though a dedicated circuit.
I suggest you take it back to who did the front brakes , or a quailfied repair shop .

Disconnect the stop lamps and test the individual stop lamp assemblies for internal shorts between all terminals.
? If a short between terminals is found, replace the stop lamp socket or circuit board as applicable.
Test the stop lamp supply voltage circuit for a short to ground.
? If all circuits/connections test normal, replace the BCM.

I have a 2002 Grand Cherokee, and the brake warning light comes on at ignition, and stays on. What could be causing this?

omg what country, and which lamp there is not just one lamp.
"brake indicator used for vehicles manufactured
for the United States consists of the word
"BRAKE" imprinted on a red lens"
and
The Rest-Of-World
(ROW) market version of this indicator has two
International Control and Display Symbol icons
imprinted on the red lens; one is the icon for "Brake
Failure", and the other is the icon for "Parking
Brake".

why not read the manual first, or is guessing how it works fun?

posted it like 300 times now.
again, on one RED BRAKE warning lamp. (not ABS)
WJ jeep 99-04
see brakes chapter 3 covers it all.
the diffr pressure valve sets the red brake light on

"The parking brake switch is in circuit with the red
warning lamp in the dash.
The switch will cause the
lamp to illuminate only when the parking brakes are
applied. If the lamp remains on after parking brake
release, the switch or wires are faulty.
If the red lamp comes on a fault has occurred in
the front or rear brake hydraulic system.
If the red warning lamp and yellow warning lamp
come on, the electronic brake distribution may be at
fault.
In most cases, the actual cause of an improperly
functioning parking brake (too loose/too tight/won't
hold), can be traced to a parking brake component."
so unplug it to see that its not CAUSE.

parting shot, i make sure all red lamp devices are unplugged
1 by 1 to know which one is tripping, the lamp.
then after bleeded, I step on the brake pedal real hard.
100lbs or more
and this will centralize the DIFF VALVE NOW>
if not the brakes have air in the system.
or the DIFF VALVE is seized.
they can stick so, learn the MONSTER FOOT brake test./
use max brake pedal pressure now.

there is a parking lamp too. that glows and will warn of low fluid levels.
are you working on the car with no scan tool?
is yes, then you miss out on all those brake error DTCs
dont you... and work totally blind

Can't shift out of park what could be causing this

Your shift-lock solenoid is not working. The solenoid is controlled by your brake lamp circuits. The first thing to do is to check your brake lamps to see if they are working.

If the brake lamps are working, the solenoid is most likely defective. If the brake lamps are not working, then you need to diagnose your brake lamp circuits to get your shifter working. Most likely cause would be the brake lamp switch or a short in the system that has caused the brake lamp fuse to blow.

I have a 1991 honda accord the brake lamp light comes on & off yet all of the back lights work properly why does the brake lamp light come on if the lights work properly

You can try to replace all the brake lamp bulbs as sometimes eventhough all bulbs are working but one of them is about to blow and give high resistance. That's why the brake lamp lights up.

1995 Honda accord ex gear shift lock, what can I do

The gearshift interlock prevents the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position unless the brakes are applied. The system uses power from the brake lamp switch to determine if the brakes are applied.

The first thing to do is to check your brake lights to see if they are working. If the brake lights are working, then your problem is most likely a defective shift lock solenoid.

If the brake lamps are not working, then you need to diagnose your brake lamp circuit to find out why. A common cause for the brake lamps to not work is a defective brake lamp switch. however, please be aware that there are other things that can cause your brake lamp circuits to not work. In any case, if your brake lamps are not working, getting the brake lamps to work will fix your shifter problem.

I have a 2007 Hyundai Sonata and the brake lights (all of them) are not working. I checked the fuse and changed the brake bulbs. Do you have any other suggestions?

Check the following :
1. First of all check the fuse of the brake lamp circuit. use a multimeter to check the +12 volt or use a test lamp of 12 volts.
2. Check the brake lamp pressure switch which is mounted on the master cyclinder- brake pedal. check for connection fault , check for voltage on switch as it must contact when the brake is applied .
3. chek the line to the brake lamp/tail lamp assembly . Check the GROUND connection of the lamp unit, check the holders.
A voltage absence till the lamp end will confirm the area of fault.
