On a 2005 sebring convertible-the interior lights stay on. They eventually turn off, but only after a long period of time with the engine turned off.

Some GM cars in the late 1990's had a timing relay mounted under the dash. This relay caused the interior lights to remain on after the door was closed. It is possible that a timing relay could go bad. In the 1999 Cavalier the relay was near the glove compartment.

I think it would start by having the battery load tested or if its the original battery it's probably due for replacement.

Probably not a cheap fix.
The car will not pass the test if the light is on during the test.
The light is on when the computer has a problem that will affect emissions or performance.
You would need to have the computer scanned for trouble codes then fix the problem. Once the problem is fixed and the code is erased, the light should stay off.

Fuel gauge issue : this could be the fuel level sensor on the tank. its only a minor thing. with in regards to the lights it sounds like there is a wire that is shorting out causing it to stay on but take it an electrician and they should be able to test for this, and also the light switch could be faulty aswell and wont let the light turn off

sounds like an electrical prob. check for corroded battery cables

bad 02 sensors. you need to have your car scanned. auto zone will scan it for free. tell you the code. sell you the part needed to fix it.

I am not sure about the 1992 since they have newer dashboard than my 86.

Anyway, I got that same intermittent issue on mine, sometime the battery was drawn in the morning sometime not, very frustrating, until i noticed that the interior light sometime was not going out as it should after 30 seconds when leaving the car in the evening.

I eventually found the timer module after removing the upper dash pad, on the passenger side. The module was just partially unplugged. Put it back in and never got problem anymore (was 6 years ago).

also check to make sure your dimmer switch isn't turned all the way up. if the dimmer is all the way up your interior lights will stay on. check your dimmer switch

Have your charging system checked. I had a similar problem with a chrysler van - the lights would brighten and then dim periodically. it turned out to be the battery.

The roatating knob that turns on the headlight pulls out to turn on the fog lights, but only pulls out when the headlights are on,
