You do realize no one ever has to go to a dealer, ever, even with a new car,you own it,& as you said the dealers are expensive What about the couple hundred thousand repair shops that do the same as a dealer?
EASY ONE.... Your VSS (Vehicle SPEED SENSOR) stopped working and it is this Sensor that gives the PCM/ECM the information to change gears. Once you change your VSS, and get it working, the Transmission will start working again...
I am Assuming that the Transmission stopped working at the same time the Speedometer did? Is that right?
If it is, then this is a easy fix. 1 bolt and one Wire Connector and DONE....
Any time you do any electrical work on a modern computerized car, you must remove the negative cable from the battery prior to work beginning. You will have to reset your driver memories and radio presets afterwards. You have to reset your computer to reset your speedometer. On most 90's Olds, turn on the key but not to 'start', leave in 'Park', then depress the gas pedal rapidly all the way to the floor three times, then turn key off. Then start vehicle. Some models are different, though; you may have to call the 800 no. in the owner's manual and let GM walk you through it.
"The Fix" works...I would have not believed it untill I did it.... Start the car in reverse and about 5 times later it reset the speedometer back to zero.....wow!
I have a 99 accord and my speedometer and odometer did not work. The problem was the VSS vehicle speed sensor. The VSS is located on the transmission. Once I replaced it everything worked fine.
