Sometimes you need to look past the obvious. If it happens again, remove the fuse panel and check the wires where they join with the connectors for the relay... these are crimped connections and can easily corrode under certain conditions.

i took out all fuses and relays. cleaned connections reinstalled. could have been a loose fuse, working great now. thank you for your help.
That's why shops charge what they do...If it was easy, everyone would do it. If you tap on the new relay and you get the same result as tapping on the old one, chances are there is a bad connection back there. May or may not be, but without looking, you won't ever know.
checked the connections and wiring under the relay?
