I have a 1993 Saturn automatic that when going up hills it shifts between gears and the check engine light comes on so you have to shut off the car then restart and it goes away. Now sense the last time when it shifts it goes in with a bang on 2nd and 3rd but not all the time.Do you think its the electonic shift control. Works great on the highway just around town it does this.

When do I use the d 5 gear in acura 2003 tl 3.2 liter

Pretty much all the time!

D3, D4, and D5 are all just *DRIVE* like on any automatic transmission, EXCEPT
that the number next to the D is the "highest gear the automatic transmission will go into".
The Acura just gives you a choice, in case you don't want to go into a higher gear (like if it's slippery traction or a steep hill, etc.)

1 means: Manual gear. FIRST GEAR ONLY.
2 means: Manual gear. SECOND GEAR ONLY.
D3 means: Use automatic transmission, but engine will never shift above 3rd gear.
D4 means: Use automatic transmission, but engine will never shift above 4th gear.
D5 means: Use automatic transmission, but engine will never shift above 5th gear.

Truck stalls when I put the pedal to the floor going up hill

Do you have an manual or automatic transmission.
If it is a automatic is it down shifting when you are going up hill? If the transmission does not go in to a lower gear the engine will die down and end up stalling.
A weak fuel pump or a plugged fuel filter could also cause your problem. So could a bad cat or timing advance.
So next time you start up hill start by putting it in a lower gear. If this works have your A.T. Checked out.
But if it does not work see if when your truck is running does exhaust smell like rotten eggs. that would be a plugged cat. If you a timing problem you could have black smoke coming out of exhaust.
On a 2003 if you have not changed the fuel filter lately it would not hurt to do so. If you have a check engine light on some of the parts stores will do a free engine check for you. Let me know if you need INFO on changing a part or how to find a part.

Desciption of the gear positions on the automatic gear shift

The gearbox normally shifts like this in "D":

1st gear to 2nd gear

2nd gear to 3rd gear

3rd gear to OverDrive

If you have the selector in "2", it will not make the final 2 shifts. "2" is nice for descending very steepo hills slowly, and also is nice to use coming down hills when it is icy/snowy, the engine will slow down in "2", and you will not have to depress the brake pedal.
