I've bought a second hand towbar for my golf Mk3 1.4 - i just need to know what wire feeds what so i can connect it up. Neal.

unfortunately with the regulations as they are you will have to have the tow bar fitted at an accredited towbar shop as you will need a modification plate fixed to the vehicle fire wall by the registered installer. If you have a machinery inspection and there is no mod plate then you will be put off the road

I would ask the retailer for the instructions.

use a test meter to locate the cars wiring thats the easy part and make sure the ground or earth connection has more than one connection ,use the towbat bolt fittings and the back light cluster earth ,Also make sure that the laws in your country allow you to fit it yourself as all europeon states now require this work to be carried out only by a certified garage with the vehicle presented to a inspection station with the certificate of conformity and homoglonation for the hitch and the certificate of fiting signed and stamped by a auto electrician and the garage that fitted it ,as you are not allowed to fit this sort of thing yourself then it has to be added to the vehicles paperwork at the inspection station where the vehicle has to have another yearly inspection as to weither the old one has expired or not .-you have been warned

Hi There it may be easier to trace the required wire from each light cluster and splice in the towbar electrics rather than follow a hand book wiring diagram ie; pin 1 Yellow L/H direction indicator. go to left hand cluster and locate left hand indicator wire, stip back the tape binding enough so that you have enough to play with and then splice in the Yellow towbar wire and continue onto the next wire on the list. Left indicator - Yellow to Black/White
Right Indicator - Green to Black/Green
Left Tail - Black to Grey/Black
Right Tail - Brown to Grey/Red
Fog - Blue to Grey/White
Brake - Red to Black/Red
Earth - White to Brown or Body earth above/behind Left hand Light

The following is the wiring for your towbar
Check the inside of the socket and you will find each of the 7 pins are numbered 1 - 7.
No 1 Yellow Wire. Left side Flasher
No 2 Blue Wire. Fog Light.
No 3 White Wire.. Earth.
No 4 Green Wire. Right side Flasher
No 5 Brown Wire. Left side Park Light.
No 6 Red Wire. Brake Lights.
No 7 Centre Pin. Black Wire. Right Side Parh Light.

Trailer socket pin1 (yellow) to left hand indicator (Black/White) at L/H Lamp, Pin2 (blue) to fog (Grey/White) at R/H Lamp, Pin3 (white) to Chassis Earth, Pin4 (green) to right hand indicator (Black/Green) at R/H Lamp, Pin5 (brown) to right hand side light (Grey/Red) at R/H Lamp, Pin6 (red) to brake (Black/Red) at either Rear Lamp, and finally Pin7 (black) to left hand side light (Grey/Black) at L/H Lamp.

On the discovery there is a purpose made plug behind the panel on the drivers side rear, behind the rear lamp
i think the relay you have bought is for lamp failure you just need a normal 4 pin 30 amp relay.

they do sell wiring harness for towing applications, however being that your vehicle is a german manufacture no ordinary wire will work because the color codes are usually different from what we use in the states. i would go and get the right wire harness to prevent and shorts from happening..........please rate this..thanks
