The best way to do that is to start the engine put the transmittion in neutral with your foot on the brake and pull it out of 2hi,,,put the trans in park then move shifter to 4 hi or lo.

Welcome to FixYa.com

Check all wiring connections and add dielectric silicon to each connector to weather proof them. Let me know how that worked.

98 dodge ram 5.2l 4x4. Trans/Idle problems.

It won't shift 1-2 or 2-3 or both unless you let off? If it is just 1-2 it might be a band adjustment, but I'll bet you have a plugged governor solenoid screen also.

Put truck in 4 wheel and while driving it makes a thump like it maybe in a u-joint. the shift selector moves every time it thumps

This is probably down to the 4wd actuator sticking and then becoming unstuck. You need the linkages lubricated and checked.

Hello i have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 5.9 lt it only has 70 000 miles but i cant get the 4x4 to engage it has the shifter on the floor to put from 2H 4H and 4L but it will not engage

O.K.,tried to get you to tell me more about the problem, but did not see an answer. I find it hard to engage the shifter...have to almost force it... also it takes bit before it actually engages... If I am remembering correctly the truck must be moving as shifted and usually does not engage until turning slightly... this is only from experience (not an expert) and I could count the times I've needed 4x4 to be less than a dozen times since I bought the truck 2 yrs. ago

88 ram 4x4 auto put trans in and it wont shift

Sounds like you got a bad trans. Was it used? Does it have a warranty? Can you shift it with the linkage off? Is everything adjusted correctly?

No 4wd in a 1998 dodge ram 2500 w/360

check behind the right side of the front axle and look for 2 vacuum lines to see if they are still connected. also check on driver side just infront of the transfer case and check the vacuum lines to see if they are still connected. usually the problem is the vacuum lines have become caught on something and disconnected themselves.

Shifting into 4wheel drive

btwn 2H and 4H can be done while driving up to 55 mph.
btwn 4L and 4H must stop put into Neutral in automatic trans. - do not stop at N on 4WD shifter. One solid motion.
