Could be a restricted trans cooler line. An overly hot trans is not going to shift properly.

SOURCE: 1999 Ford Taurus Wagon stays in 1st gear

Most Ford Taurus wagons have a transmission that generally goes first. that's the main reason. Just something to do with the way they are built. The only advice that I could offer is either replace the tranny or just not run the a/c. Usually it's just the motor working twice as hard running the a/c and that in turn puts the computer into the phase of lower gears for the transmission. there in being the problem.

SOURCE: 98 mercury sable

See my answer to post by dwood1542 on 2/6/09 for 1998 Taurus. It could be the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor). The same thing happened on my 1998. The VSS drives the speedometer and tells the electronic transmission how fast the car is going. So, if you are moving and it happens, look at your speedometer. If the speedometer goes to zero, its the VSS. P500 and P502 codes may be stored in OBD-II.

Well i got a 1994 mercury sable i checked the transmission fluid and it was fine but didnt know that the car engine had to be hot before checking the transmission fluid. i drove about 80-100 miles then...

If you have topped up the fluid whilst hot and it still has this problem then you have a gearbox fault hence the check light. It seems suspicious to me that the last owner told you the light was nothing. Some gearboxes have a filter you can change out which can solve gear changing faults.

There are two D on my cars gear list i dont know which one is overdrive & what is the difference between drive & overdrive.the car is 2004 mercury sble

The D nearest to N is the overdrive. In every day driving just leave it in overdrive. When climbing or decending steep hills you can downshift into Drive, this will prevent the transmission from constantly shifting between gears.

98 Mercury Sable no overdrive

I would suggest trying a tranny service. Changing the fluid and filter may help this. You can also put some transmission conditioner or something in it and try that. Lucas makes a real good transmission cleaner/conditioner. Be careful not to overfill the tranny though by adding this product. If this doesn't fix it then the soleniod will probably need to be replaced which requires tearing into the tranny

99 Sable - hesitation or flutter at 35-42mph - service light on

I had the same EXACT problem on my 2002 Sable. Freaked out thinking I needed a transmission.
All I needed was a tune-up. When not firing properly, sensors "take over" to compensate.

Check plugs/wires...you'll be surprised...I sure was!!

89 mercury sable not shifting

It is definitely not your catalytic converter since that is a part on your exhaust used to burn off any fuel that wasn't ignited in the engine.

Are you able to change the gears using the 1 and 2 on the shifter?

If not your transmission is most likely toast and you should get it replaced.

If you are able to, it is a problem with your computer and you will need to have it re-programmed.

Either way you should have your mechanic service it as soon as possible.
