A air blower "rigged" high/low adjustment knob

Not sure about all your info. If the motor shorted, it would not turn. So something else shorted. I presume you had a friend wire the motor to a variable knob and that is why he wants you to keep it on all the way. Good idea since turning it down will cause it to heat up and possible burn out. Just find an off on (toggle) switch and put that in place of the knob thing.

2008 highlander ac temperature control dial/knob

Hey there,
I broke my knob the last year too - was crawling from the passenger side to the driver side and kicked the knob. Was AMAZED at how poorly-designed that piece is.
Anyway, I ended up redesigning a new piece in Fusion 360 and 3D-printing and and reinstalling the knob. It works PERFECTLY and is way stronger than the original. The good news is also that the color doesn't matter. :)

Hello jeffgranstro
Sorry to say there's no easy button in the automotive world yet. You're heater controls are cable
operated and a cable problem most likely caused the knob problem. If you just want a temporary
fix, remove the control assy. from the dash. The front trim cover is held by 8 clips 2 top 2 bottom
and 2 on each side, with a small thin screwdriver, gently pry around the cover till it pops off.
At this point you should be able to see if there are screws or clips that hold the assy. in place.
The objective is to remove the problem cable from the assy. and pull it down from under the dash
where you can operate it with a pair of baby vise grips. Next, put the rest of the heater control assy. and trim plate back in place, and use those controls normaly. Thats one way to get by what is a stupid design to start with. Hope this helps.

2005 RX8 heater is blowing cold air. Fluids are topped up.

You need to repair the heater core with a soldering gun.

If you do not have heat, or only have heat, IMHO it is most likey the AC/heater control unit. This is the part which has the AC/heat control buttons and knobs.

Easy Diagnosis:
The easiest way to verify this is to turn on the radio, press and hold the power on/off button and press and hold the scan-up button for a second (full second). The word "A/C TEMP" should appear on the left of the display and a number from 0 to 16 on the right. I suspect yours will have the number 0 (or 16 if heating only problem) displayed no matter where you turn the temperature control knob. If this is the case you could turn the temp. knob to full heat and see if it goes to 16 after pushing down or to the right on the knob.
In a working system, the number moves evenly in increments of 1, from 0 to 16 as you turn the temperature knob.

Easy Fix:
I was able to take mine out and solder 3 loose connections to fix it.

The beginning steps are the same as for any radio removal procedure and check for loose connections.

Radio volume will not adjust.

Hello. If this is repairable, the radio will have to be removed anyways. Some radios can be removed with a butter knife. If you pry off the front dash panel, there will be 4 screws holding on the radio. If you don't have the 4 screw type look for and tabs on the radio that are pryed up on the insides, pry them down with butter knife. Pull out stereo and disconnect the clip on wire harness.

You can try blowing out the unit and the knob if you purchase a can of "Air Duster" (compressed air and c02 in can)
If this radio is equipped, remove screws and cover to gain access to inside. Blow out the entire unit, especially the knob. The knob should also come off to spray inside.

If cleaning doesn't help, I suggest going to the junk yard and get another one for $15, otherwise WalMart, Kmart, sell them for $35+
