You might need a new belt, or the spring in the belt tensioner is weak and not holding the belt tight to the pulleys, in which case that will need replacing.

Check this items
1 belt idler pulley bearing may be going out
2 belt tension pulley also bearing can be going out
3 accessory belt tension-er can be going out, this gadget keep a high tension on serpentine belt, if spring weaken can cause belt to be loose and slip around the pulley. replacing belt is also good idea if its has high miles on the car..spray any lubrication on any of those will be temporary fix but will come back. hope that help some..good luck!

Probably a vacuum hose off. Have someone sit in the car that knows how to drive. Parking brake on, put in reverse and track the sound down. You can put a length of 1/4" plastic hose in your ear and use it as a stethoscope. Be VERY careful if you go behind the vehicle.

My 2007 Land Rover Freelander makes a whistling sound when vehicle is idling. Sound goes away when accelerating or applying petrol?

it may be a turbocharger if so equipted, lots of turbocharged cars whistle as the unit gets older..only other thing I can think of is something with the exhaust system.. get it looked at by putting the car up on a lift and inspecting it..now some cars also whistle thru the radio ..this is called alternator whine and is usually correected by a filter in the power line of the radio...good luck

Van brakes squeal/whistle even when stopped

Sounds to me like a dry, loose or worn serpentine belt. With the motor idling, lightly spray the serpentine belt as it's spinning with WD-40 or other oil based lubricant (Don't spray near the alternator). If this doesn't work, turn the mortor off and check the tension and for cracks or worn spots. The brakes will not squeal when you are completely still.

Whistleing sound, when accelerated,while cold

yea sounds like it needs a new belt. if the belt isnt tight enough it will make all sorts of weird squeaks at all different times. tell her to replace the belt if she worries about it otherwise let it go.
