After 3 years of driving with the hold light flashing (mechanics couldn't sort it out) I finally got it fixed! It was a problem with the electrical valves in the transmission system.
This car model has 4 of them and I thunk one had failed years ago, hence the dashboard light. When a second one failed recently, the drop in performance warranted stepping up efforts and I finally found someone who could help.
I replaced the two faulty valves and I'm back on! Hold light on the dashboard is gone.
I was experiencing a very hard kick while shifting between the third and fourth gear and that information helped this mechanic narrow it down to the valves. I was also losing acceleration at some points. A computer diagnostics check can also shorten your troubleshooting.
Mazda Premacy is called the MPV here in the US. Hold light coming on is the transmission system equal to the check engine light for the engine. Sounds like a transmission related control problem. A check of codes stored will give you a better clue as to what the transmission computer is seeing as a fault. Transmission related codes are typically 700 series codes. ie P0701 or P0750. This code may give you more information as to what the problem is.

Release the fuel pressure by loosening the gas cap, raise and support the car on jack stands,squeeze the plastic tabs on the male end of the connector,and pull the connector apart.Some models have 2 tabs,and others have 1 and the fuel line screwed into the other side.Remove filter mounting bolt,unhook tab from frame and remove filter. when you put in the new filter, make sure the arrow is pointing toward front of engine.On the line with plastic tabs, just push on till you hear a click, then pull on it to make sure it's latched.Don't forget to tighten gas cap.
