Anyone know anything about ford taurus? i have a 1998 ford taurus. it will not shift into 2, 3, or overdrive, only reverse, and first. we have already checked the linkage/cable. it is fine what else could it be?

HAVE U RUN THE TROUBLE CODE TEST ON THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE? IF NOT THAT IS THE 1ST PLACE U START, YOU MOST LIKELY HAVE A FAILED TRANS BUT THIS CAN ALSO BE A TRANSMISSION CASE CONNECTOR PROBLEM OR THE SHIFT SOLENOIDS OR THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE, PULL THE TRANS CASE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR OFF AND CHECK FOR WATER OR CORROSION ON THE PINS, THE TRANS IS SHIFTED ELECTRONICLLY SO DO THE TEST 1ST.

FORD TAURUS SE 1998 SURGE IN POWER AND WHEN DRIVING IF U TAKE UR FOOT OFF THE GAS IT DIES
This is not the only problem.

Do the doors also fail to lock when the vehicle starts to move?
Does it fail to shift properly and tends to stay in low gears?
Overdrive function Fails to work?

RECOMENDATION: sight unseen.

Replace speed sensor.


Engine does not know it is moving and puts the engine back to an idle when it should be stepping down the engine speed.

My 1998 taurus does not shift into drive or overdrive
Check transmission fluid level. If that's okay, it may be starving for gas because of a partly clogged fuel filter, and the ECM won't allow it to shift. Could also be a clogged filter in the transmission.

I have a 1998 ford taurus. it will only go into first and reverse. it will not shift into 2,3, or overdrive. we have checked the linkage/cable. when we disconnect the cable we can hear it click into 2, 3,....
HI, this transmission has shift solenoids that are used to initiate the gear movement. they are located inside the actual transmission pan. you will need to drain the trans and, pull the entire pan to access them for replacement.

Replacing these burned out solenoid(shift) will restore the normal shifting pattern.
