First off you need an owner's manual. You can get a free one here.

The light that looks like a gear with an exclamation point inside indicates there is a problem with the transmission. May just be low of transmission fluid. To check the level dive the car until the transmission is warm, park on a level surface, place gear shift in park with engine running, and check transmission fluid level. Add only if necessary and do not overfill. If it is not low of fluid then seek professional help. The exclamation point in a circle under the fuel gauge next to the Brake light indicates you are low of brake fluid. Check the level of the brake fluid. If it is low you more than likely need to check your brake pads as they are worn out.
That is a transmission warning light. You need to take it to a transmission shop where they have a special code reader that will tell you what the problem is. My car did the same thing was lucky found out it was just a solenoid in the transmission that needed replaced and not the trans itself.
most likely due to a stripped out torque converter or a broken pump shaft. trans. has to come out to repair either or. you should make sure the fluid is full first. with the car running and warm, check fluid- if it seems over full, the pump shaft is broken, if it's just full- probably the torque conv., if its low add trans. fluid (mercon 5) 1 qt. at a time until in crosshatched area on the dipstick. hope this helps and good luck
Check Transaxle
Momentarily illuminates when the ignition is turned to the ON position. Illumination of this light indicates that a problem has been detected and shifting may be restricted. If this lamp remains on, have your vehicle serviced immediately.
I have a 2001 ford taurus and i have transmission fluid leaking on ground when it runs. i was driving it today and it would not shift gears. Then when i got home i saw transmission fuild in the ground.
I have a 2003 taurus and in my manual it showed this had something to do with the ABS system and if you need brakes or put over sized tires on then what the factory recommends it will cause this ABS light to come on
