The neutral safety switch. If the shifter is on the floor then the switch is either on the transmission itself or under the console on the shifter. If the shifter is on the steering column then that's where it should be, once again unless its on the transmission. Your switch is faulty theres no fix other than replacement.

Testimonial: "Cool. Thanks very much. Just have to find the part. Sounds like something I can do myself. Console shifter so should be easy to do."

Car stuck in reverse how do I get it back in park

The shifter is connected to a cable that is then attached to a small lever on the transmission. Disconnet the cable at the transmission end and you'll likely be able to physically put it in neutral. Disconnect it at the shifter end and you'll be able to move the shifter to trigger the neutral lockout switch and allow the car to start. You can also short this switch to trick the car into thinking it is in neutral.

What is a neutral safety switch?

The Neutral Safety switch monitors the position of your gear selector lever and either interrupts or allows the starting circuit in your car or truck to do its job. On newer vehicles it may also monitor the position of the brake pedal to make sure that the vehicle is in park or neutral AND that your foot is on the brake.

If your vehicle is equipped with a neutral safety switch, it should NOT start UNLESS the transmission is in Neutral or Park. On the other hand your vehicle SHOULD start when it is in Neutral or Park. If your car will start in Neutral but not in Park, you have a bad switch. Also, if your car or truck will only start by turning the key to the start position and wiggling the gear selector lever, your neutral safty switch is in need of replacement.

The nuetral safety switch is usually found near the gear shifter. If your car has the gear shift on the column, then the neutral safety switch is usully mounted on the steering column near the brake pedal. On floor mount or console mount vehicles you will find the nuetral safety switch mounted near or on the shifter mechanism.

Elantra won't start and moves when it's in park

I'm going to say something happened to the cable between the shifter and the transmission. There is a switch on the transmission that prevents you from starting the engine in anything other than park or neutral. The transmission is probably in reverse or drive which would allow it to roll.
Someone would need to check the lever on the trans where the shift cable is attached.

My 2001 dodge durango will run, but once i park it it wont start again. If i play around with the shifter the truck will start, What is wrong with it?

Is this an Automatic transmission? If it is, and what is happening is that when you turn the key the starter will not engage, then you play with the shifter nob, and then it will start, then it is the
NUETRAL SAFETY SWITCH.

This is there to ensure that you cannot start the car in a gear, and will only start in either Park, or Nuetral. They go bad, just like anything else. Try starting the car with the gear-shifter in the NUETRAL position. I bet it will start.

Where the switch is located on this car, I am not sure, but it is not an expensive fix.

97elantra shifter stuck in park but when useing the override button it will move but car takes off in drive

Sounds like to me you may need to have the nuetral safety switch adjusted or replaced. This switch will allow a vehicle to start only if the gear shifter is in the park or nuetral position if it starts in any other gear it may need to be adjusted or replaced hope this helps you.

1999 Regal GS -stalls, starting trouble, won't shift now

the batt is suspect...take it to autozone, or other place, they'll check it out free......the shifting out of park is a seperate issue, the pawl for the steering/shifter is not working properly....did you notice if the steering wheel would turn when the shifter is stuck?....probably not....when this happens try to turn the wheel back and forth-not hard but not gently- a little graphite dust sprayed in there would help.......hope this helps you out

1997 Pontiac Sunfire (automatic) transaxle

I do not know what you are looking at in the manual, but you probably heard a horrible noise when you put it into park, as the parking pawl tries to hold the car in place. Thist usually does not harm the transaxle. If the engine won't start then something else happened, perhaps the neutral safety switch was damaged or knocked out of adjustment. You might try to move the shifter back and forth and then back into park and then try to restart. If that doesn't work try to put the car in neutral to start. If you must have the car towed somewhere the repair should not be expensive, just have them reset the neutral safety switch.
