Hi,
You might want to replace the thermostat, it could be stuck. This doesn't allow water to flow through the engine to cool it.
Follow the top radiator hose to where it connects to the housing on your engine. Two metric bolts are all that connect the housing. It's easy to do, very cheap and overheating could cost you an engine!
Good luck...
Check for coolant leaks, usually a bad water pump will have a steady drip from the bottom of the pump.
Also check and make sure the radiator cooling fan is working.
If you find no leaks and the fan is turning the problem will probably be the thermostat.

The first thing that you need to check is your thermostat. Then move to the radiator cap and water pump. Most often it will be a bad thermostat. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for using FixYa!

If it is running hot in a short distance, I would check the water pump to find out if it is pumping coolant thru the system. It should run for 5-10 min before the thermostat would be a problem.
Do a Compression Test on the Engine and see if you have a Blown Head Gasket. Chances are that is what is causing the Overflow... Exhaust Pressure is getting into the Cooling system
Check the radiator cap,The purpose of the radiator cap is to apply pressure, water boils at 110F and for every 1LBS you increase the boiling point 10F so the optimum temp is 210 F replace the radiator cap and if it still comes out after driving a short distance that we leave for a another subject
You may need a new Radiator cap or may be the radiator fan is not working on high/low speeds. It would have helped if we know what year make and model of vehicle you are talking about.
The expansion tank will be more full when hot. Let it cool down and check it then. The level in the axpansion tank should go lower. If not then you may have a faulty radiator cap.
Also have you checked the cooling fan? Engine driven? With the engine off, spin the blade. Does it spin real freely? Continue to spin for more than a quick second? May have a bad fan clutch. They have fluid inside and the fluid can leak out of the seals after age.
COULD BE THERMOSTAT IF TOP RADIATOR HOSE IS NOT HOT AND BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE GOING TO WATER PUMP IS HOT THE THERMOSTAT STICKING PARTIALLY CLOSE.IF TOP HOSE IS HOT THE RADIATOR,ENGINE BLOCK HEATER CORE NEED FLUSHING OUT.IF WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE LEAKING REPLACE WATER PUMP, FAULTY WATER PUMP WILL CAUSE ENGINE TO OVER HEAT.REPLACE RADIATOR CAP MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50 / 50 MIX SOLUTION ANTIFREEZE AND WATER IN COOLANT SYSTEM. IF ALL LOOKS GOOD CHECK ENGINE OIL ON DIP STICK, IF OIL IN DIP STICK LOOK LIKE MILKSHAKE YOU HAVE BLOWED HEAD GASKET THAT WILL CAUSE ENGINE OVERHEATING WHILE DRIVING CAR IN SHORT DISTANCE AND ENGINE OVERHEATING.
im guessing that maybe your thermostat is sticking. im not sure what else would make your coolant rush out like that. if im right, then that would definitely make your car overheat at speed, but not at idle. that isassuming that the thermostat is at least partially open. if that doesnt fix the overheating, then u may want to consider checking the ignition timing for being too far advanced, or even the camshaft timing.
are you sure its the water pump? Its located and the passenger side mid lower on the belt. One thing them cars were noted for was blown head gaskets. If you don't see any possible leaking and you smell it look at the exhaust pipe while its getting hot and you'll see with smoke come out or a lot of moisture coming out of the exhaust or a lot of dripping. Also if your radiator fans are not working and it heats up more just idling or short drives that will make it over heat and coolant to flow out of the radiator cap or over flow.I hope these things help you in locating the problem.Have a great day...
try to run the water pump without hoses, and add water in the 'in' side, if is powers out the other side, then it's fine. how is your water/coolant mix?
no could you give me an idea?
