If its got the lever on the floor. put in drive, let the truck come to about 5mph and let it roll and pull lever to 4 wheel HIgh/never use low unless you get stuck (AND DON'T use 4wd ON DRY PAVEMENT,(TRY FOR A SECOND AND TRY TO TURN GOING SLOW AND YOU'LL SEE WHY,IT WILL RUIN YOUR TRUCK!)Don't keep your truck in 4wd unless you have to (FULL SNOW COVERED ROADS).If your truck is older, and your gonna be in 4 wheel drive for a extended time lock the hubs (if IT HAS THEM ,NEWER ONES WON'T)I had a 1994 silverado chyenne 2500 nice truck, wrapped it around a tree a week after I finished putting 7G's into it ,I loved that truck :'(

I have a 2004 2500 HD My 4 wheel drive suddenly quit working I put in a new actuator My 4 wheel drive indicator light show I'm in 4 high or 4 low you can hear my transfer case shift but it still won't go...

May be the problem is not in the actuator in the case but in the actuator that engages the hub locks . Check for vacuum line / electrical wires faults . The noise may be from the hub lock or from a cv joint in that side.

2003 chevy silverado 2500 HD when ingageing 4 wheel high on the fly it makes a load clunk and grinding noise

I had a similar problem and had to have the 4 wheel drive serviced. It need new grease. the grease i had was old and it was causing the gears not engage cleanly thus causing the grinding sound until they were realigned.

Chevy Transmission problems

First thing is to read out, with a rented scanner, whatever codes the computer is storing instead of just replacing parts. You didn't say whether the transmission is automatic or manual--there are different troubleshooting procedures for each type. Is the shift a floor or column type?

Grinding in and out of 4 wheel drive

You say 'new' truck, 09? or new used? I have had 3 Fords, 3 w/ manual trans. case, if you go into 4x4 Low range, you must come to a complete stop before shifting the trans. case to 4x4 mode, and I always put trans (automatic) in neutral before slipping into 4x4, it engages smoothly, no grinding. 4x4 high range can be put in while moving, but I would let off the gas pedal, shift to 4x4 high range, then resume accelerating. If there is any grinding going on doing it as above, something isn't right. Check the trans. case fluid level also, to make sure that's not an issue.

2003 silverado chevvy 2500 HD

Automatic trans? Sounds to me like the trans is either busted up or damaged in such a way that the gearing won't rotate or things are binding internally. With the drive shaft off, transfercase in 2WD, and trans in anything but PARK, the driveshaft should be able to turn by hand. Of, course, a drop of the pan can also give a indication. When gears bust up in a 4L80E, there is evidence.
