Check fluids. Start, warm up to operating temp. With foot on brake and at stop, shift through all gears, P, R, N, D, 2, 3, etc. pausing 2 seconds in each gear, then go all the way back through the gears, pausing 2 seconds in each gear still. Check the transmission dipstick. Should be in range. Too much, or too little will cause bad behavior. If fluid is good, it could be the tranny or the 1-2 shift solenoid. Some are external on the tranny and replaceable. Good luck!
SOURCE: transmission
Transmission model is 4L60E,and the symptoms you are describing is a common failure on these transmissions all the way back to it's predecesor, the 700 R 4 model. The reverse input shell, splines into the low/reverse planetary sun gear. The reverse input shell has a collar with splines made into it,and these splines are prone to stripping, and sometimes the collar itself will break free from the shell.Without the shell functioning,no reverse, and this is likely what you are hearing.Aftermarket companies sell heavy duty, and standard duty, replacements.Eventually, you will lose the forward gears also.Good luck.
SOURCE: Mercedes after shifting to reverse to drive the 1st gear slips
mercedes did nothing wrong your transmission is probably blown up. no way they could put in the wrong parts they wouldn't fit. how many miles are on your trans now? did you ever do a transmission service on the transmission that mercedes says is lifetime fluid? dont do back to the dealer find an independant shop that specializes in mercedes, like the one i work for. the dealer doesnt care about its clients. Us independants honestly do care
SOURCE: no reverse
there should be a vacuum tube on the pas side of the trans. its either diconnected or broken. or the bans are bad. also check the filter. mine went bad and all I did was change the filter and used synthetic fluid.
when the pan and filter is down see if there is a heavy spring in one of the corners. if its casing is broke then it wont allow fluid to travel to and fro.
SOURCE: Transmission wont shift into 3rd gear.
I had this exact problem on my 2005 5.3L Suburban... It would shift into 1 and 2 and reverse, but not 3 and 4.
I took it into a transmission shop, and he said the 3-4 shift solenoid was burned up. Wanted 1500 to fix it. Far from home, so I have to pay it.
the same thing is wrong with my ford and they told me it was the trans
