If the pump is bad, you will see wear in the rollers and the fluid will have metallic particles in it. No pump is worth $950, so look for a used one or one of similar shape for some other vehicle.
If the pump is bad, then the hold system will be contaminated and need flushing.
But intermittent loss of power steering more often is dirt in the rack.
