The transmission may have started to over rev under load but limited. Ran OK today but when I stopped at a store this evening and returned after 30 minutes the car started but when I put it into drive the engine revved up but no sign of any forward motion in drive or any of the forward motion gears (L,2,3,D) but reverse works fine. The transmission fluid was low, only showing a quarter inch on the stick, even after topping up the fluid no response.

Get your transmission position sensor checked. With it being an automatic it doesnt have a clutch

It appears you have a Forward Clutch FAILURE. Replace the trans after you get it diagnosed and verified by a professional technician. By the way, do you have a Check Engine light? If so, what is the diagnostic code? The dealership can scan the system and find any codes which may have been stored in the TCM (Transmission Control Module). If there were any 'Incorrect Gear Ratio" codes, it's most probably the trans itself.

the engine losing power, check your coolant level, if it is extremely low the temp gauge will not show the engine is actually hot. The tranny sounds like you have a filter that is clogged, tranny fluid thins when it gets warm and will past thru a filter that is clogged, but in the morning the fluid is thicker and will not flow thru the filter without manually shifting it
SOURCE: transmission won`t go into reverse
Does the Check Engine light come ON when this happens? Whenever the "Check Engine" light comes on, there is always a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the ECM (Engine Control Module). You'll need an OBDII (On-Board-Diagnostics) scanner to retrieve any codes recorded/set in ECM. Once you do this and let us know what, if any codes are set, then we can go from there. The problem you describe could simply be a wiring/connection problem -- no telling at this point. Now, having written that, my suspicion is the LR (Low/Reverse) clutch or the solenoid (hopfully, just the solenoid).
