Rough idle and jerking when it goes past 40 mph. Check engine on.

I have a 94 vw golf gls and it wont idle at all and it jerks really bad when it starts getting warm. I noticed today when I put water in the reservoir the jerking was less. Any ideas? its been in and out of the shop.

Is it a 1.8L ? if so it may be the gasket/spacer between the manifold and the injection throttle body. Does it also give jerky performance when leaving a stop? This gasket is a common failure and is often completely destroyed yet the car will still run! The ECU simply adapts - simple and cheap fix though. GL

My 94 k2500 6.5 turbo diesel is idling high but when I tap the accelerator it goes back down and idle rough, when I try to drive it will jerk or surge, and it will also blows smoke what is wrong?pmd.

check that the turbo is fully operational ( variable vanes are free to move , actuator and vacuum hose are in good condition
the smoke is an indication that it is on on the job
the high idle may be from excess fuel and not enough air
and the rough idle and jerking indicates a air fuel ratio problem back again to the turbo
If you have fault codes run them and consider putting it on a chassis dyno for a full test of the pump and turbo

Jeep cherokee jerks when shift into overdrive going 45 mph

If the engine has a rough idle you know you have a miss-fire or other problem with one or more cylinders.
When you shift into overdrive the engine is working harder than in normal drive because of the lower torque/RPM.
So any slight miss under normal conditions will be magnified in overdrive or with the ac on.
See if you can nail down the cause for the rough idle.

97 concorde with 3.5 engine @ 40 to 45 mph it starts bucking .

Computer firmware needs upgrade

Take your car to a Chrysler dealer shop and have them update the transmission program. As your tranny wears it loses it shift point and stutters between 40 - 45 mph looking for the right gear to change to..Had same problem in 94 Concorde and 94 T&C minivan.Reprogramming tranny fixed both cars.
