I had a similar issue. In my case, the cause was a faulty electronic 4x4 switch, that is, the small unit with the push-buttons in the dashboard you push to engage or disengage the four-wheel drive. Replacing the switch fixed the issue.

It could probably be many different things, so I can't say for sure that this will solve your specific issue. It's probably worth checking out, though.

SOURCE: 4 wd low range will sometimes engage 4wd high will never engage

I had a very similar problem with my 98 gmc 2500. The 4 low would engage - though the upshifts were erratic, but no 4 high though the light sometimes came on. I changed out the electric shift solenoid or whatever it is called, on the transfer case and it worked fine after that. A fairly simple fix that can be done in 15 minutes. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 1994 gmc 4x4 non engaging high range four wheel

I would check to see if it is the Axle Actuator.  On that model truck there is an upgrade available that is electrical upgrade.  Instead of using a vacuum to engage the axle, it uses a small electric motor.  The cost for this part isn't much more than the older vacuum model.  Usually the electrical one runs around $100.  This is a relatively easy change that most any person can do with just about any experience.

SOURCE: only 4x4 high won't work 94 jimmy

Thats a fairly common problem with that model. Typically it involves a 75.00 part called a transfer case actuator. I personally think the price is right if the vehicle is in good condition other than the actuator. Be advised the Jimmy's normally came with a 700R4 automatic transmission that were prone to failure. Very expensive to repair 2200 to 2600. Mine failed twice before I sold it. Hope this helps. Marvin

I have never driver a 4 wheel drive. I am going from portland oregon to phoenix az. not sure how or when to switch to four wheel. does the truck need to be in park? etc.

Do you have manual locking hubs on the front? If you do, you have to turn them to 'lock' position. If you have automatic hubs, you skip that step. Never shift into 4x4 low range while moving. You must come to a complete stop to shift in or out of low range. Regular 4x4 (high range) can be engaged while you are moving. Let off the gas, and put it in 4x4 high range, do the same to go back to 2 wheel drive. Vehicles that are part time 4x4 (can be shifted in and out of 4x4) should never be driven in 4x4 while on a dry surface, as you can cause excessive wear or even failure of the system. So only use it in snow, off road, etc. Have a safe trip!

Stuck in 4x4 low range

My wife just recently had a similar problem. She got stuck in the mud and put our 2004 F150 in 4x4 Low to get out. She didn't. Had to have AAA pull her out. She then left a bit later and the truck was still in 4x4 Low even after switching to 2WD. She even tried going backwards to get it to switch. So she called me frantically because the car would not go over 10 mph w/o the RPMs getting way too high. I said I'd call her back. So I called our local Ford Repair shop and he gave me these instructions (loosely based on what the owner's manual says to do) 1. Start Vehicle 2. Switch to 4x4 Low 3. Put in Neutral 4. Switch to 4x4 High 5. Go in Reverse for a bit and then Forward a bit again (You should now be in 4x4 High) 6. Put in Neutral 7. Switch to 2WD You should now be good. If that didn't work, then try repeating step 5 after step 7. Which reminds me. I really should call her back :) (It worked)

4WD UNIT JUMPS OUT OF HIGH?

EASY FIX!

Your Schro's are going bad in the 4WD HIGH Trans Case. This sucks i know. But i had the same problem berfore.

Unit will continue to work good in low range since the stress is less then on the HIGH range. I would never use the 4WD HIGH anyway...doesnt do much on the street...just tears up the gearing and schros.

Hope this helps,

THanks,

Mark

4wd high range does not lite or engage

I had the same problem with my 98 sierra 4x4. Turned out that the electrical activator on the transfer case was not working. It will still go into 4 low but not 4 high. Replace the electrical switch on the transfer case and it should work again.

2001 gmc jimmy keeps kicking into 4 wheel drive

the 4 wheel low light will usually only blink because the low gear is meant for a very slow speed and usually wont activate with the vehicle in motion i would have to say the sudden switch to 4x4 though would probably be a short in the wiring some place
