My key wont turn in the igniton of my 2004 monte carlo ss

your battery has been disconnected. if your battery is completely dead you wont be able to remove the key from the ignition. check for loose cables or dead battery

key or tumbler bad. tap on tip of key with hammer while trying to turn key. sometimes key will turn. spry w-d 40 in tumbler first..

if this happened after the new battery the security system may need reprogram. turn the key to on and leave it on untill the security light turns off then turn the key off wait 5 sec turn the can on it should be ok.

had the same problem...key would not turn in ignition....turned out to be the ignition tumbler and igniton switch.....chevy dealer raped for a bill of $650.00

The dimmer switch is bad.

Is the battery dead or disconnected? I've had that problem in another Chevy. With battery disconnected it would not return to the off position and allow me to remove the key.

What was the code number? 3.8 engine right?

This is a mechanical issue. Try moving the gear shift around. There's an interlock that prevents you from turning the key all the way off if the vehicle is in gear. This is so that if you are driving and the key gets turned accidentally, that the steering wheel does not lock! It the linkage is messed up, or in the case of a console shift, the cable is damaged or out of adjustment, you cannot turn the key to off. Sometimes you can push the shifter harder into park and it will allow the key to be turned the rest of the way to off, whick will also verify this problem.

if battery is dead you will not be able to get key out. have someone jumpstart and it should work
