2001 echo engine races when idling why

Engine idle speed is limited by reducing the amount of air entering the engine. When an accelerator pedal is pressed, it pulls a cable which opens a throttle plate which then allows more air to enter causing engine RPMs to increase. At an idle, the throttle plate should be closed as to not increase the RPM. There's also a part called the idle air control (IAC) valve which controls how much air bypasses the closed throttle plate at an idle. Lastly, air could enter the engine via an intake gasket or vacuum hose leak; the same rules apply, the split hose or gasket allows air to enter the engine and RPMs will rise. To summarize, a throttle plate not closing, and IAC valve stuck open, or a split intake gasket or vacuum hose could all cause a higher than normal idle condition. You can read more about how to troubleshoot high idle conditions here: https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-to-troubleshoot-a-car-idling-at-a-high-speed-by-tim-charlet

Location of map sensor on 2003 windstar

Fern, I believe you mean the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF). It is normally found in the fresh air intake plastic/rubber hoses attached to the air filter box, on yours it may be in the part of air filter box. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Coolant temp ga does not work. It is not the coolant senser. Also fans only come on when ac button is pushed.

Russell, This sound like you have air in the cooling system, have the system bled for air. Other areas to look at are Rad cap faulty, thermostat, collapsing hose, partially plugged Rad inside/outside, intake/head gasket leak, etc.

How to troubleshoot air fuel mixture problem on 1989 lesabre

If your car has a MAF sensor, it is in the air intake hose between the intake and the air filter.
If the check engine light is on, you would need a scanner to read the computer data coming from the sensors to diagnose the problem.
