Allow the fluid to cool down completely then check the level on the dip stick. This problem comes from excessive level in the box and some may have to be drained out.

Transmission dip stick keeps popping out

check trans. fluid level per owners manual. The high operating temperatures cause fluid to expand greatly,an over-filled transmission can actually force excess fluid out of the dip stick tube.check level with trans. hot, engine running in park on a level surface. After driving, place shifter in park, hold brake and move shifter through all gears and back to park.remove dipstick, wipe clean,re-insert and check fluid level.normally, trans fluid & filter should be changed +/- 100 k miles

1999xj8 problem transmision default

change trans filter and fluid before inst. new fluid warm a bottle of lucas slip stop in a bucket of hot water (helps it enter the tran and mixing with other fluid) and fill. be carful not to over fill ( check with engine running and check frequently after change while trans is hot shift manualy from first to park holding it in each gear for three seconds to get an acurate reading) it does more damage to over fill a trans and power steering than to run it a little low. best of luck

Hi there,

You definately have a transmission problem.

When was the last time the transmission fluid was completely replaced? Trans fluid is CRITICAL for proper shifting operation. The measuring of trans fluid is also critical and must be measured in a certain way (engine warm, selector moved through all gears, then finally left in N, while checking for hot level).

Your trans also has a fail-safe function - when a fault is detected, the trans will go into "LIMP" mode. This still allows driving, but will usually remain in 3rd gear. In this instance, the "N" (Neutral) light on your dash may also flash.

If you are technically inclined, I can provide your with instructions on how to check your trans computer for fault codes...

Let me know...

Sounds like the Trans Solenoid Pack. Park it, until you fix the issues and hope no internal damage was done.
Do not throw parts at it. Forget the VSS unless you know how to test it.
Check for codes
Changing Fluid, has nothing to do with shift stratagy and never solves trans issues.

How do I check automatic trans fluid in a 1997 Honda Civic? In the past I've always check fluid with the car idleing in park at normal operating temperature. But the Honda dealer is telling me to check it...

That's because you don't understand how a Honda trans works. Think of it as an automatic manual trans, that is Honda's trans are the only one's where all the gears are constantly meshed. When a Honda trans shifts, it engages that specific gear. All the gears are meshed, a Honda trans engages a clutch pack which gives power through that specific meshed gear, just as you would if you were shifting a manual trans. Now since all the gears are constanly meshed, they are inmersed in trans fluid, If you check it while it is running, It will show less, plus the fact on some Honda models the gears are right next to the dip stick and if your not careful, the dip stick can get pulled into the gears and destroy the trans.

Car not changing gears correctly

check trans fluid level, change trans fluid and filter, check for broken or loose connections on tranny, check speed sensor on trans,

Trans still wont engage

If there is no fluid when you take off one of the lines (check both: the cooler might be plugged) while the engine is running, and there is fluid in the trans, then you have a bad pump inside the trans, or the valve body fell off. Either way, it's probably not going to engage. Ever.

2005 chevy cobalt

This is how you do it.

Ensure that the transaxle case temperature is 70° to 90° F (21° to 32° C). With the engine running, shift transmission through all gears. With engine idling in PARK, remove the check plug from the transmission. If transmission has been overfilled, allow fluid to drain out. If no fluid drains out, add fluid through the TRANS FLUID fill cap under the hood on the driver side in 1 pint (0.5 liter) increments until it slightly flows from the check plug. Reinstall the check plug.
