When i first start up the ute i can get it into reverse no problems but when travelling around for a while it takes me a while to get into reverse

Either the linkage is worn to excess or / and the gearbox.
Why not drain the gearbox oil(when hot) and put a slightly heavier grade oil in along with a goid oil additive (lucas).

You do have to line up the gears in front of pump as the pump is syncronised to the engine.Do not get this wrong as its a world of grief if you do.Sorry cant help with details but a haynes workshop manual can be invaluable if you intend to do any work yourself.

Well, Your are going to have to put a few bucks into a new clutch , disc, pressue plate.
A local transmission shop should be able to help you out.

Check the Rag Joint under the hood.
SOURCE: cannot put gear shifter on column into park,
sounds like the shift linkage has fell off
look under the hood of your car and have someone move the shifter
look for the movement and see is it is hooked up
