How to program my key to 98 ford explorer

for Ford keys (1996 -early 1998 Ford, Lincoln, Mercury)

If you want to initiate a new master key....

1. Insert new key into ignition cylinder and turn it to the ON (RUN) position. The security light on the dash will flash for fifteen minutes.

2. When the security light stops flashing, you have FIVE minutes to start the next step. Turn the ignition cylinder OFF and then back to the ON (RUN) position. The security light on the dash will flash for fifteen more minutes.

3. When the security light stops flashing, you have FIVE minutes to start the next step. Turn the ignition cylinder to OFF and then back ON (RUN) position. The dash will flash for fifteen more minutes.

4. After the security light stops flashing the third time, the new key has been programmed into the vehicles computer and will operate the car. It has replaced ALL the previous electronic key codes and is the ONLY key programmed into the vehicles computer.
If you want to add a key....

1. Insert an existing key into the ignition cylinder.

2. Turn the ignition cylinder to ON (RUN) and back to OFF.

3. Remove the existing key and, within 15 seconds, insert the new key and turn it to ON (RUN).

4. The security light will light up for two seconds to indicate success in programming the key into the vehicle.

5. Don't attempt to start the vehicle with any key for at least 1 minute.
<HR>On-Board Programming Method "C"

for Ford keys (Later 1998-newer Ford, Lincoln, Mercury)

If you want to initiate a new master key....

1. This requires that the vehicle be connected to special dealer equipment. There are two ten minute delays involved while this device erases all existing key programming and sets up the vehicle computer to accept new key codes. Two new keys should be ready because the system requires a minimum of two keys in the program. After the first two keys are programmed, additional keys can be entered individually by following the instructions for adding duplicate keys (below).

If you want to add a key....

**You must have two original keys to perform this procedure. If you only have one key, you WILL have to take it to the dealer to get it programmed**

1. Insert and existing (working) key into the ignition cylinder.

2. Turn the ignition cylinder ON (RUN) and back to OFF. Ignition should stay on for at least ONE SECOND.

3. Remove the existing key and, within TEN seconds, insert a second working key and turn it to ON (RUN) and the back OFF. Ignition must be in ON for at least ONE second, but no more than TEN seconds. Remove the key.

4. Insert the new key before TWENTY seconds have elapsed and turn it to ON (RUN). Leave it the ON position for at least ONE secondand turn back to OFF.

5. The security light will light up for THREE seconds to indicate that the new key has been successfully programmed.

6. To program additional keys, repeat steps 1 through 5
As a precautionary measure for all of the above procedures, you should wait at least one minute after you have performed this until you start your vehicle.

I called myself programming the new keys for my pt cruiser, but,it didnt take. At first it would start and run for a few seconds, now it wont turn over.what did I do wrong and how can I fix this?

Takes the master key to get it started again. The security gives you 3 tries to get the vehicle started, after the third time, it kills the starter.
2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Note: You must have two valid keys to add a new key to the system.
1. Insert the first valid key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to the
ON/RUN position for at least three seconds, but no longer than 15 seconds.
Then, Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the first key.
2. Insert the second valid key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to
the ON/RUN position within 15 seconds. After 10 seconds, a chime will sound.
In addition, the Vehicle Security Light will begin to flash. Turn the ignition switch
to the LOCK position and remove the second key.
3. Insert the new key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to the
ON/RUN position.within 60 seconds. After 10 seconds, a single chime will
sound. In addition, the Vehicle Security Light will stop flashing. To indicate that
programming is complete, the Vehicle Security Light will turn on again for
seconds and then turn off.
The new key is now programmed. The Remote Keyless Entry transmitter will
also be programmed during this procedure.
Repeat this procedure to program up to eight keys.

Reset code for 2005 Ford Focus keyless entry remote

So this answer is on the same topic of a 2005 Ford Focus keyless entry remote. There is no way to "reset" the code from the vehicle, however you can reprogram an existing or program a new keyless entry remote to your Ford Focus by using these simple instructions:

*** THERE ARE 2 POSSIBLE PROGRAMMING PROCEDURES. ***Procedure #1
Note: Obtain all remote transmitters for this vehicle.
Note: Do not depress the brake pedal during procedure.
  1. Turn ignition from OFF to RUN 8 times within 10 seconds, with the 8th time ending in RUN. Door locks will cycle to confirm programming mode. (Off is the position where you can remove your key, RUN is the position just shy of starting your car.)
  2. Within 20 seconds press any button on the first keyless remote to be programmed. Door locks will cycle to confirm programming. If you only have one remote then skip to step 4.
  3. Within 20 seconds, press any button on the second keyless remote. Door locks will cycle again to confirm programming. Repeat step 3. For all other remotes.
  4. Turn ignition to OFF. Locks will again cycle to indicate end of programming mode.

    Procedure #2
  5. Note: Obtain all remote transmitters for this vehicle.1Fasten seat belts and close all doors.
  6. Turn ignition from OFF to RUN 4 times within 6 seconds, with the 4th time ending in RUN. (Off is the position where you can remove your key, RUN is the position just shy of starting your car.)
  7. Turn ignition to OFF. Acoustic signal will sound and system warning lamp will illuminate to confirm programming mode.
  8. Within 10 seconds, press and hold any button on the first keyless remote. Wait for acoustic sound and warning lamp to flash (confirming programming) then release button on remote. Wait 2 seconds but within 10 seconds repeat step 4. For all other remotes. If you only have one remote then continue to step 5.
  9. Turn ignition to Crank or wait 10 seconds to end programming mode.

What can i do to program key for frod expedition 1997

In order to program your own chipped keys you need 2 keys that will start the vehicle. Start by putting the first key that starts the vehicle into the ignition and turn it to the run position(not the start position) and back to the off position. Within 10 seconds repeat this step with the second key that starts it. Then within 10 seconds put in the new key and turn it to the start position. The vehicle should turn on and the new key will be programmed. If you do not have 2 keys that start the vehicle then you will have to take it to a Ford dealership so that they can program new keys for you.

My 1998 ford expedition won t start and the theft

the light blinks when the system is armed. Normal.

Your key has to be able to communicate with the receiver in the ignition area. Does your other key work ok?

Anti-Theft The passive anti-theft system (PATS) uses radio frequency identification technology to deter a driveaway theft. Passive means that it does not require any activity from the user.
  • During each vehicle start sequence, the ignition key identification code is requested by the PATS module.
  • If the key's ID code has been programmed into the system, the vehicle powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650) is allowed to operate; this allows the vehicle to start.
  • If the key's ID code is not programmed into the PATS module, or if no encoded key is detected, then the vehicle PCM is disabled.
The PATS module, located under the driver side instrument panel, communicates the state of the security system to the PCM via the module communications network. The PCM, based on the communications from the PATS module, will determine if the vehicle's engine will be enabled to start. If the PCM prevents the vehicle from starting because of PATS, the PCM will store a DTC in memory.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The anti-theft vehicle protection system utilizes the THEFT indicator, located in the instrument cluster (10849), when the ignition switch is turned to the RUN/START position. The indicator provides system prove out and operating status to the customer or technician.
Each PATS ignition key holds electronics that give each key a unique ID code.
The PATS will activate the indicator signal when the ignition switch is turned to the RUN/START position. The THEFT indicator will turn ON for two seconds, then turn OFF.
If the THEFT indicator flashes for one minute or more, this indicates that there was no key code received.
When the vehicle ignition switch is placed in either RUN or START, the PATS module requests the ignition key ID code. The PATS module requests the ignition key ID code by supplying power, ground, and the carrier signal to the transceiver to energize the ignition key. After the energize period, the key transmits its ID code to the transceiver module, which sends it to the PATS module.
The PATS module then compares the received KEY ID code to those stored in memory (16 maximum). If the ID matches, the PATS module sends an enable signal to the PCM over the module communication network.
The passive vehicle protection system utilizes the engine management capabilities of the PCM to enable or disable the vehicle engine. The module communication network is used to send and receive messages to and from the PCM.
Within one second after engine start, the PCM must receive an enable signal from the PATS module through the module communication network or the engine is disabled before the vehicle can be moved.
If the PATS module recognizes a stored ignition key code but there is a module communication network concern preventing the PCM from recognizing the start enable signal from the PATS module, the vehicle engine will be disabled. If this happens, the PATS module will flash the THEFT indicator for one minute, then flash diagnostic trouble code 16 ten times to indicate there is a problem with the module communication network circuits or the PCM is not responding properly.
The passive vehicle protection system will disable the vehicle from starting if there is a:
  • Damaged encoded key.
  • Unprogrammed key.
  • Non-encoded key (key has no electronics).
  • Wiring concern.
  • Transceiver concern.
  • Control module concern.
  • Module communications network concern.
